Bring the rpm's up slightly (about 1000 rpm) with your foot on the brake and slip it into gear. Feather the throttle with the brake on to keep it running. Then slowly decrease the rpm so it will idle in gear. If it keeps running it's not tranny related. If it dies it's timing related.
