Got-DANG Pop Rivets

I almost threw a vent window through my windshield tonight. I'm redoing the gaskets (Steele Rubber this time) and I want to do it the right way and use rivets on the division post. I'm only able to work on this by myself. What's the easiest way to do this? I'm open to buying an extra tool to do this job, as I want it done right.

Seems everything I read, you need like 5 hands to do this. LOL No help and hope you can get it done.

they do brake relining among other things. Take it over there and see if they can rivet it for you. I wouldn't call them they may just say no on the phone but if they saw it they may see its an easy job on a foot riveter that can do car brakes

I did mine on the suburban and don't remember it being that bad. I used the repop rivets with a hammer and block or punch and they worked, windows never blew out at 110 MPH.

Jonzcustomshop , ive been using the first article for referece. he mentioned one or two tools that could be used to make the job look professional, but never mentioned how to aquire them. what i may be able to do is put the vent window in a vice (softly) and put the 1/4" extension underneath to where its standing on the ground, and also supporting the rivet underneath. i managed to get one rivet in place last night, but because i didnt have a straigt shot at it with the hammer, i made the rivet crush crooked :-(

dwcsr, i may give that a shot friday, being as that i will have the day off. i would really like to find something that i can order to do it myself though, i try to do as much as i can on my own.

LT1 Burb, how did you do the one in the corner, alll the way at the top? you have to have a straight shot at these for them to set correctly, dont you? from the second article that Jonzcustomshop posted, the part that crushes goes toward the glass, im not seeing how that one is able to be done.

I honestly wish I could remember but it was probably 8 years ago, I am pretty sure I used a vise and hit them with a hammer and punch.

Ill try and play around with it a little more when i get home, but i would really like some sort of tool to assist in this. With the one rivet i tried to set last night, it didnt work out too well for me.

try using a smal "dremmel" cut off wheel to remove the rivet take a standard rivet gun to replace it ...you may have to grind down the tip of the gun..(narrow it down to fit the channel) and put in a new rivet...

SIR, are you saying to use a different type of rivet or modify the rivets that ive gotten from LMC?

i ordered the rivet kit from LMC, and im assuming it uses the same size rivets as what was from the factory.

i think i may just use pop rivets. see how that turns out. wish me luck guys.

Ok, used a pop rivet gun and some 1/4" (I believe) rivets and they worked perfectly. Im happy!

Bringing up an old post because I'm about to tackle the wing/vent windows on my truck. I've been looking for a tool to do this besides the punch type that at least half the post I read say isn't all that great. I'm just asking if that 'farm' rivet setting tool actually worked well for setting the wing vent rivets. Did it work for all of them or only the pivot rivet. I don't really mind spending a little for a tool that will do the job right and I won't have to tear down my windows again in a couple of years to replace sloppy rivets.

Not to discourage you, but I gave up and saved my money for the new vent assemblies . Took 6 months, but worth it, and I should install them this month. Yes, I'll take a lot of pictures.

I used rivets on mine, it was fiddly but I managed. Here's my little writeup on the hacksperience.
