Has anyone ever replaced this a/c compressor clutch?

Like the title says, I'm wondering if anyone has actually removed/replaced just the a/c clutch. Is it doable with the compressor on the truck? What tools are needed? I looked in my factory manual and found zilch, searched on here and found nada, so I figured start a post so maybe the next guy will have some info

I do not want to open up the a/c system bc last year I replaced every piece of the system and am extremely happy with the results other than the chirping clutch when it kicks on that started about two weeks ago. What sucks is that I bought a new (not reman) delco compressor so I wouldn't have any problems... Enough ranting. Thanks in advance for the help

I had a boss that did it once. Had to make a tool to pull the clutch off the shaft but it is doable.

Yes there is a special removable/install tool we had at the dealer...If you have the tool, remove shroud and it is accessible without draining the system. Just take notice of the gap before removal.

Yes.
You need the removal and installation tool and you need to make sure the air gap is correct.

Check your clearance first. You might just need to adjust the clutch. This is easy to do, and O'Reilly has the tool you can "rent". I usually set the clearance between .015-.020 inch. Here is a link where a guy shows how it's done. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hqp9IJ2ivl4

If you do have to replace it, the same tool set does the job.

Just to ask the stupid question, ANY chance it is a slightly loose belt? That was my first thought when I read 'chirping clutch'.

Re: Has anyone ever replaced this a/c compressor clutch?

I felt that the belt was too tight already, but to make sure I just snugged it up a touch more and it's still chirping.
I think if I have some forward wiggle room when putting the new clutch on the compressor shaft then I'll leave it out a little to help line the belt up with the water pump and crank pulley a little better.

Just an idea but wouldnt a worn or dried out belt cause that noise also.I'm assuming that it is a serpentine belt. If it were me I would try a new belt before I tore into the AC compressor. If that doesn't cure it then you have a spare belt. Just saying.

Good suggestion. I'm running v-belts still though and replaced the belt with a new one when I put the a/c on last year. However I'm not sure how well I like the gates brand belt I'm running just yet.

Re: Has anyone ever replaced this a/c compressor clutch?

Just read on another GM forum where the gap between the clutch and the pulley had tightened up and was chirping.

Most GM compressors close the air gap between the clutch and the pulley because the clutch is pressed on. All you have to do is increase the air gap with the proper tool and that’s the ens of it.
But no on the other forum the guy was told to replace his clutch and purchase an expensive AC Compressor service kit that he will probably never use again. After spending lots of money his new clutch is not chirping and he is a real AC technician.

But I am stupid so spend away.
