Re: GM 8 track player install question

Some of the wiring has been altered over the years and it is not really making sense to me what goes where. It appears the radio speaker attaches directly to the 8 track player and speakers look straight forward (see pics).

I'm having trouble with the power wire and additional stuff on the harness. Here are the pics of those wires.

Any chance you can confirm the manual covers installation? Or perhaps post a couple pics?

Re: GM 8 track player install question

Have you looked inside the covers on the radio/8-track player?
Sometimes there is a hook-up/color code diagram inside.

Re: GM 8 track player install question

Here is a hook up instructions sheet for wire harness, and where and how to mount speakers.
Sorry this is the only pic I have of each saved.
I have not installed my own tape unit in my truck yet

Thank you for the responses. I'll take a look at the diagram. Hopefully it gets me to where I need to be.

Re: GM 8 track player install question

It would really help if I could see an example of an uncut wiring setup. Based on the diagram I think my speaker wire off the 8 track is not correct. I also have no idea what the wire labeled as (?) connects to. I believe #4 is the main power supply. Anyone else have any thoughts? Thanks.

Re: GM 8 track player install question

Here is the back of one of mine, I have two Original GM 8 track decks both have the same wires from the back.
There are three seperate wire connections from the tape deck.

One last question, hopefully! does the black wire on the 3 plug assembly connect to the speaker plug?

Re: GM 8 track player install question

There is a single plug lead also, (in added red box)

On the wiring diagram it says the 3 plug lead that go's from tape deck to radio,
1st lead... 14v DC
2nd lead... speaker
3rd... ground

The 3 plug lead from your center speaker plugs to the Crossover Network box.
Did I answser the question, or am I not understanding you?

Re: GM 8 track player install question

That helps. I'm trying to figure out if the (? key note) in post #11 connects to the other harness your 8 track. Sorry if I am getting confused. Definitely not good with electrical

Almost 100% positive it does, just want to make sure.

Re: GM 8 track player install question

I am going to use an old speaker harness and get mine back to original. As it sits, I don't have the attachment that goes to the existing radio

Re: GM 8 track player install question

Thanks again for all the help. I figured that the 2 black wires that I see are ground wires and screw into the back of the unit. Can you confirm? No more questions after that. Haha
