Determining original point of sale

Hi all. I have been trying to find out some history on my truck since I'm pretty sure it was purchased new locally. Unfortunately, my truck was for sale by the son of the previous owner who had recently passed, and the son did not know any information about the truck. There was also no documentation, manual, build sheet, or dealer tags. I am wondering if any of you have had luck determining what dealer your truck was originally purchased from after being in a similar scenario to mine. I used to have an old beetle, and I know with those you can send the VIN in to VW and get a birth certificate that includes what dealer the car was built for. It would be nice if GM did something similar.

Unless - your truck was built in Canada or built in the US for sale in Canada. If that is the case GM of Canada would have the build info.

Your best bet would be to try to find the original build sheet stuffed somewhere in the vehicle: in the seat cushion, in the dash, inside the door, under the floor covering, etc.

Re: Determining original point of sale

Even with a protect-a-plate, it is hard to find out about the first owner. I was fortunate enough to have one in my 72 but the original owner was nowhere to be found. Turns out he died in 1993, and his widow sold it to the second owner [ found maintenance receipts under the seat in his name] at that time. I looked him up and he told me what I wanted to know and the rest, I just guessed at. Maybe you can find a friend of the family that can shed some light on it.

Re: Determining original point of sale

Good luck. I love looking up histories on things.

My truck was bought new by my dad. He never once took it to a repair shop for anything, doing all the work himself. He did hire a halfa**ed bodyman and painter to "restore" the truck in 1990.

Ugh......lots of bondo and crappy paint.

Yep, my excitement in learning about that site was quickly extinguished when they replied back saying no records before '77...however, I did also ask if they had any preproduction/assembly line photos of our trucks in general and they said they would search the archives and see. Not sure if anyone has inquired about this before, but we shall see what they come up with.

Assembly line photos here:

Be sure to scroll down for insightful commentary.

I do have some pre-production shots taken inside the Design Studio but I don't have them handy.

Cool! I've actually seen these before but they are neat to look at again. I was hoping to find photos for the 67-72 trucks since I've never seen any of those before.

Re: Determining original point of sale

really cool. when I was in high school we went on a field trip from auto mechanics to the Framingham Massachusetts assembly plant. It was pretty cool but I feel like I don't remember as much as I should. I do remember the vehicles going into the vat of primer like that and I can remember the finished product driving off the end of the line. Im pretty sure it went on a dyno roller in the floor just at the end of the line. That would have been around 1981. I cant remember what they were building at the time there. I had a bunch of literature from there but it was lost in a fire in 86 along with a bunch of other stuff.
