Couple engine swap questions

I found a smoking deal on a 2000 chevy 1500. I was told it has a 4.8 vortec engine. Unsure if its an ls or an lt1 though. Also no idea on the transmission. Any idea how to tell the engine or trans? Also if it is an lt1, will the trans and harness etc work for an ls engine if i find one down the road? Sorry for all the questions. You all have been a major help to me so far!

Just fyi, im doing my 72 c10 build by myself and im not super mechanically inclined. But i learn fast. So basically im doing what you guys suggest and using your knowledge to help further my own. So thank you all so very much!

Re: Couple engine swap questions

Unless it was modded it's not an LT1.

Re: Couple engine swap questions

All 4.8, 5.3, and 6.0 are LS1 not LT1. You will need the harness from the donor vehicle to work along with the computer brain. The transmission will be the 4L60 E, 4 speed automatic. If ur planning on using this engine or any other LS1 engine you will need harness and computer, and others on here have down the same. I'm sure they will chime in soon. Cool to hear your learning and working on an old truck! Wish you the best of luck, I'm sure you will do fine.

Re: Couple engine swap questions

2000 1500 is going to be a 4.8 or 5.3 Gen III LS engine with a 4l60e. There's a sticker under the hood that'll tell you the displacement of the engine and I think one of the cylinder heads has the displacement as well.

No idea whether the ecu is compatible between LS and LT1 but I'd assume they're not. A later Gen IV ecu might be with a reflash but even then I doubt it. As far as I know any LS ecu will control any GM trans with the proper flash. Flashing the esc you have done by someone to get rid of the stuff you don't need when swapping to an older truck, the theft system, the rear O2 sensors, convert to speed density, setting it for your trans of choice if different from stock, etc.

Pop over the LS section of the board for more tips. Lots of info on mounts and such.

I can't answer your question but I had to say Hi and Welcome to the Board when I saw a fellow Lafayette-ian.

Re: Couple engine swap questions

You will need the fuel pump/sender unit as well, so take the whole tank.

Same here. Best I've found around me is around $1500 for 225+k miles with blown trannys and seats too torn up to reuse. And the local yards want $1300+ for 150+k mile engines and I'm not sure that even includes the harness and/or accessories. Get it!
