door panel questions
My '72 door panels are in good shape except the plastic is (flakey?) if your finger touches them when cranking the window, you will get plastic under your nails. Is there any way to sand them down and repaint them to look nice? they are otherwise in good shape and i dont want to spend 200 on parts i dont really need for a DD. Also where is the best place to buy new plastic tree clips ? The door panels are parchment so where would be a good place to find a paint to match?

Re: door panel questions
I wonder if you could spray a poly on them or some kind of sealant. My 72 had rotten plastic panels when I got it, I came across some metal 71 panels dirt cheap and switched them over with pretty much no problem.

Re: door panel questions
I had pretty much the same issues with my 72. I found automotive interior paint that said it would work with hard plastic and then matched the color the best I could. I went through 4 different colors before I found the one I liked the best. I painted a small section of the back before I did the front. For prep I hit then with a scotch bright pad then cleaned with blowgun then denatured alcohol. Sprayed 3 coats then a clear coat of the same brand. After a year they are holding up well so far. I bought the paint at Pepboys.

Re: door panel questions
after cleaning them and going over them with a scotch bright pad, did the paint keep it from flaking anymore? also is there a self filling paint to use that would help or do you have to use an interior paint?
any pictures of the ones that you guys did? i would like to see both the painted ones and the earlier model ones please

Re: door panel questions
Mine have since been upholstered, but that's the 71 panel underneath.

Re: door panel questions
My 72 door panels are doing the same thing. They have peels so much that the grain is gone so I do not think painting mine would look good. Here is what I plan on doing to mine. I am going to sand them to get the loose flake off then I am going to try some rustoleum brand spray can bed liner and try to put a light texture on it. Then paint them with some rustoleum satin black paint.

Re: door panel questions
what did you have to do to make it work with the 72 oor and the longer studs on the window crank and door handle?

Re: door panel questions
Honestly I don't remember having to do anything, but it was a while ago. My 72 wasn't a Cheyenne so the panels were about as flat as the 71 panels. I used some escutcheon plates that I came across at the pick and pull.

Re: door panel questions
The spacer rings that go behind the handle, on the outside of the panel. I just found some old chrome ones from an old Oldsmobile or something and used them cause I liked their look. Now that it's upholstered, it has prob a 1/4" backing mayerial and then a velvet type material over that, and they fit perfect without a huge escutcheon. So there would only be probably a 1/4" gap at most with the 71 flat panel on there. Does that make sense? I'm kinda bad at explaining things, ha.

I painted mine today with the rustoleum truck bed liner. There are more pictures on my build thread.

Whatever you do, don't even consider buying the repops.
