It's pretty common. Usually when someone swaps out an I-6 or just doesn't care to retain all the short water pump stuff, and lets it go with the old engine. Later model rigs had a different alternator set up with a long water pump. So to keep all the belts lined up correctly, cats will just stick with the long pump and not have to change everything over to belts and brackets for a short pump.
