Yep... just rattle can black chassis paint. It comes out as kind of a satin black so oil won't stain it like a flat black.

Various manufacturers make it. It is a little tougher than plain satin black paint. My local auto parts store carries 2 brands that make it... VHT and Rustoleum.

Here is another 2 cents. I don't like POR 15. just me...But I think POR engine enamel is great.. Can be reduced and sprayed with HVLP gun etc.. dries with a gloss and is very durable. It is $50.00 a Qt but it should do both inner fenders both sides 2 coats....Good luck with what you decide.

The only POR15 product I use is their cleaner/degreaser (formerly Marine Clean). Works fantastic.

Hopefully the epoxy primer holds on so I vote Linex if money is not an issue, second choice is chassis black. I take the epoxy primer will need to be scuffed before any topcoat. Linex requires scuffing it with 80 grit, has some texture but worked out perfect on my 42 inner door panels. I have heard some offroaders use it on the entire vehicle. If they had not been epoxy primed there may have been other cost effective choices such as por15 (I do not use) or zero rust which can be applied with no primers --sand blast and knock down with a wire wheel then apply.

I really want LineX but money is an issue. Ugh.....I could probably swing it but I could use that $300.00 the LineX guy quoted me!

I am headed over to the media blaster tomorrow to get my outer fender blasted (again, if needed) and epoxy primed. I have no plans to load up those inner fenders and the LineX guy is in the same town as the blaster. I guess I'll just go with chassis paint or POR 15.

I'll decide in the coming days. Thanks to everyone that gave advice.

For chassis black I use low gloss black engine paint. Tough stuff with just the right sheen or lack of...just right!

Click on the links Tractor supplies paint made for tractors,trucks and implements NOT ENGINE ENAMEL . This stuff is tough you can spray over bare metal or primer use the catalyst hardener with it and save your money ! I use it on all my frames and it looks great .

And NO that's not yellow paint it's buff epoxy primer.

I had the under side of min Line-X'd and couldn't be happier. They look great and clean up with just water from a hose.

I priced both Rhino Liner and Line X and had the opposite happen that you did. Rhino wanted almost $400 for the pair, and Line X did mine for less than $100 for the pair.

If you have another Line-X place close by, check with them and see what they'll do for you. And don't be afraid to start by saying Rhino quoted me...

WV has very little "close by."

Glad you like the LineX though.........I am still considering it.

I knew that would get someone's attention! It gives a little more clearance for my tire to go up into the fender when aired out.

We do seem to miss very little on this forum! I think online forums attract the most aware people on the internet.

"More clearance?" Did you lower your vehicle or do you run non-stock sized tires?

I was able to remove my stock inner fender (driver's side) with both the outer fender and tire on the truck, there was plenty of room.

I couldn't do this on the passenger side as too many of those "u clips(?)" broke off, some I could not reach with vise grips.

My truck is bagged, but it's not extreme and I'm able to run stock inner fenders. However, when aired out, the tires would catch the curved part of the inner fender between the fender and the more level, top part of the inner fender when aired out. Trimming this area allowed the truck to drop 3/4" or so more, and it gives me a little more clearance if I want to drive with it almost completely aired out.

Not sure what you mean by "aired out." To me that means "open it so the bad smells can diffuse away."

if eliminating and avoiding rust over time is the main concern...then paint it as factory (black).
Then I would 'rust check' it every year to ensure it stays fresh and solid.
Its a really great product/process and it really does the job without looking like 'restoration add-ons' etc.
I'll be doing my truck with this product/process in about 4 weeks...and will rest easy over the winter while its in storage knowing the body condition is 'locked'.

I'd use that before I'd fork over all that cash for any kind of spray in bed liner stuff.

I mean how often are you going to "clean" your wheel wells out? I've owned a lot of rigs over the years and have never done more than spray water in there. Usually after 4 wheeling when I had 4x4's.

The Eastwood stuff is still a little more spendy than I would like. Can't beat a 5 dollar can of paint from the parts store.

We got our inner fenders rhino lined. I think they we're $70 each. The finish on them is very nice and uniform. It also added 5-10 lbs to each of them and made them seem more solid. I'll post some pictures when I'm in front of the truck again. I think the expense was well worth it. We even had the back of the bumpers done! Just make sure you talk to the shop about how they want the surface. We had issues with the liner sticking in a few spots.

Also look up Kirker Hot Rod Black Satin Finish. I bought some and liked the way it shot.

It's just a standard step bumper that were available for these trucks. Dealer options or aftermarket. It's nice thick steel and then I welded the D rings onto it since we were always wrapping rope around each corner to tie things down in the bed. Our old one was smashed in an accident and this one popped up on our local Craigslist. A little body work and paint and it's better than new.
