Re: Filling mirror holes in doors

For small holes just quick shots with the wire feed. Grind em down with a flapper disc and maybe a thin THIN coat of body filler or 2K primer to smooth it out. Big holes, get some sheet metal. Use a bench grinder and some vise grips to shape a piece around the size of the hole and use a refrigerator magnet to hold it while you tack one side then remove magnet and tack other side.

Re: Filling mirror holes in doors

If you don't have quick access to a wire welder or wanna go a little old school, I just filled some in my doors with "Eastwood's Lead-free Solder". All you need is the flux, solder, and a small butane torch. Grinds a little easier than a welder, and holds up nearly as well.

Re: Filling mirror holes in doors

If they are the huge holes like what was on my truck, I made some small round blanks out of my old tranny hump. I tacked a small wire in the center to give me something to hold on to, then I just tacked it in place. Take your time are really move around the metal with the welder so you don't overheat and warp the metal.

If you ask some of our P.O.'s they'll tell you that duct tape and bondo is great for filling sheet metal holes.

Hello Dereck, I have a craftman bottle torch, so if I use this as the heating element then the soder/flux will melt ok just like a soder iron does? Would I apply flux to the tip of the solder being used just like I was sodering wires or using a soder iron? I am asking just to make sure I do it right if I attempt this. Thanks for your educating feedback.

Re: Filling mirror holes in doors

Thanks for all the feedback guys! As my first post, I am pretty stoked to become part of the community, once I buy a truck of my own. Looks like others are already learning from your advice too, so that's rad!

In the past I have worked on bikes, this one being my crowning achievement, which I could not have done without the help of a good friend of mine, Pozz

I found a 70' Blazer locally, but its $8500 (imported from texas i believe) and needs a lot of work. Sucks bein from rusty Canada! But once I find a good project, I will be set. Keep up the great help!!!!

Re: Filling mirror holes in doors

Before wire feed I would braze holes shut.

You'll just sand around the hole till it's metal for a good area around it, apply the flux to the metal and heat it until it tins over. Once it does this you wipe it off with a towel (use gloves, as you can imagine it's a little hot). Now that the surface is tinned and ready for solder you just heat and solder just like you would pipe... use less heat as you're closer to being done so you dont melt the existing solder out of the hole. I did this to mine about 2-3mo ago and it worked great. Once you sand it down it just looks like the same piece of metal.

Re: Filling mirror holes in doors

Next week I may do the holes in my roof. If so I'll try to do some step by step photos and start a thread with them to clear up any of the confusion on the steps. It's pretty simple and by the time you get the first hole or two down it's pretty simple.

Just outside of Oshawa in Courtice is Bill's Truck Shop.Bill usually has California project trucks coming and going.Try him.I have a 70 long bed that I could be talked out of,It needs a motor and cab mounts. But I will never get rid of my 67 short step.I have been hovering around here for a couple of years but I finally registered. You will find that these trucks are still around but solid sheetmetal is pricey up here.Good luck.

Re: Filling mirror holes in doors

I filled in some holes in the roof of my burb from a roof rack by duct taping a penny to the underside and using my millermatic 140. Flapper disk, spot putty, primed and paint.

I was at Bill's just last week. Problem is, I grew up in Niagara Falls and am pretty knowledgeable with border dealings, and I know I can import my own truck for a lesser cost. His trucks are solid, but many still need sheetmetal fixes and lots of work. We'll see, it's finding time to import a vehicle that is the biggest hurdle, as it is not very complicated at all.

Here you guys go, I finally did part of the roof just to show you guys how easily it can be done. I taught myself (I've done autobody for sometime just never toyed with solder till here lately) Check out my thread:

Re: Filling mirror holes in doors

nail heads work well also plus it gives you something to hold then cut the shank off and grind smooth
