Common rattles
I did a search but nothing came up with "rattles". Can't imagine I'm the first to ask this...
I just installed some sound deadener and it works great. But going over bumps etc.. there some rattles that I'm sure people on this board have taken care of. I get some rattles from inside the doors, it's not the windows (glass) but sounds like the linkages around the door handles. I hear something up by the hood/front fenders... I even think I can hear my tailgate handle rattling (it is loose and kind of hanging down). I know it's a truck but if there is something simple I can do I'm game... so let us all know what you've found and fixed Last edited by Mondo; 11-10-2007 at 12:11 AM. |

my other truck (1987 chevy P/U) had a rattle in the door. It was the lock tumbler rod. I put a wad of sound deadner on it and it stopped.

Unwanted cab noise is one of the last things that I'm working on getting rid of as well. Some are with the doors the way they sound when they close, glass rattling sounds and vibrations at certain rpm's. It's really trial and error when it comes to eliminating these irratating sounds.

try using a hammer, preferrably rubber, and something like a good wooden dowel. carefully tap on different areas and parts that you feel might be rattling. your gonna need to spend some time under the truck to accomplish this.
i went through my truck like that to eliminate all rattles. i found stuff in the front fender area was either loose wiring harnesses, accumulated road gunk, or misplaced tools that had fallen in that very front most lower corner of the fender. check things like dust covers, clutch tranny linkages, exhaust hangers under the cab and rear. the doors, yes it is most likely the door handle, lock mechanism, or the window track. good luck with that. |

I usually get some one to drive for me and try to find a quite low traffic area.Use a mechanics stethascope and try to locate the rattles exact location.Usually if it is in the doors the door panels need to come off and whatever is loose can be jostled.Or you can have some one drive it while you try to look.Ashtray and glovebox door bumpers are one good place to start.Also the hood has bumpers on the sides and two at front that may not be adjusted or may be missing or too hard to cushion the rattles.

some of the rattles i have found and fixed:
tail gates can rattle any way they want to; different speeds, all the time, etc. usually one of the little rubber bumpers that the gate closes against are missing (may not apply to 67-72 ) the parking brake cables can rattle against the frame underneath the truck. slit a lenght of vaccuum hose and cover the cable where it can touch the frame or crossmember. oh if you have a stick shift lube the pivot point for the clutch peddle, (it will squeak on some trucks, when you step on the clutch peddle, i hate that !!!)
