There are numbers to match on trucks, just no partial VIN on block. But, the suffix code will tell more than year. The engine in my '72 K2500 is numbers matching. It isn't original to that truck, though. It is from a '72 Chevy K/20, but matches my truck. What the suffix tells is '72, K/20, 350, 4bbl, automatic transmission, and all that matches. It is the correct engine for my truck and no one can tell it isn't the one it left the factory with
You are correct as long as the truck build date was after the build date of the engine. In 1972 they were still using leftover 71 motors for a while. So as long as the application is correct there is no way of telling As far as correct motor for this truck this could still be the original 283. At any rate nice find mike it will make someone a nice project. Well worth investing money into
