White Letter or White Walls
Hello, new to this site and created my first post on the welcome forum earlier today. I would like to know your opinion on what looks the best on the truck I'm building; white letters or white walls???

Re: White Letter or White Walls
Welcome!
Personally I like the white letters, but they both depend on the wheels really. |

My budget only allows me to stay with the 15" Rally's for now. Thanks for your opinion!

Re: White Letter or White Walls
Whitewalls dont belong on a late 60's vehicle, they belong on 30's and 40's cars. The letter tires look right at home on there

Re: White Letter or White Walls
I think the look you are going for with your truck the whitewalls would be my choice, they play off the white roof.

Re: White Letter or White Walls
Thanks y'all. I'm slightly agreeing with the majority thus far...white letters. But, the old school look sure lends itself to white walls????

Re: White Letter or White Walls
Hope I don't offset your opinion but with that paint job, I like the whitewalls. of course the white letters as well, and I have those on a vehicle, but, doesn't the majority have the letters? so if you want to be a standout, white walls are the way to go.

Re: White Letter or White Walls
My wife is as much into this build as I am, and she likes the white walls. Btw..she's the cook. So, it will take an overwhelming majority of "white letters" to sway her opinion. But, I might just have to remind her that she said "I don't care what it looks like as long as it jars the ground when running"!

Re: White Letter or White Walls
Neither are unique, plenty of rigs running both. Go with whatever you like best. White letters look best on a truck imo.

They are actually 3" portawalls that were popular many moons ago. In case you've never heard of them, they are made of rubber and mount between the wheel and tire. So, you are actually seeing the same white letter tire with portawalls installed. |

Re: White Letter or White Walls
I'm old enough to be familiar with Portawalls.
Where in the world did you find them?

Re: White Letter or White Walls
I really don't recall...eBay I think. I bought these for the last (first) truck I was building, but accidentally sold it before it was complete. Thought I might try them on this truck, but can't decide. They really fit good and looks just as good.

Re: White Letter or White Walls
Personally, I would go with blackwalls..... but the white letters are a classic period-correct look..... and I never have been a fan of whitewalls anyway.
But the second pic of your truck, maybe it's the stance, the angle of the shot, the truck's color, I don't know but the whitewalls look just right. And you don't see them every day (that's a plus in my book).... WTH, go with whitewalls and keep the cook happy!

Re: White Letter or White Walls
Seems like opinions are split about 50/50. Lucky for you, you used portawalls and can switch back and forth! Thats what I did when I had my Beetle, except I had thin white line portawalls. Those would be period correct for those not digging the full whites on the truck. For the record, of the two options you presented, I like the whitewalls better.

Re: White Letter or White Walls
I tell ya I like em both ways. I am not a fan of blackwalls on anything. I have cobras on my 69 stepside. Satin black w/white roof on yours with those whites and rallys and spinners sure looks good to me.
Now I'm not as old as Larry but I remember growing up in the 60s blackwalls were normally on farm and commercial trucks and very base model vehicles. White walls were a step up like a Deluxe package. The 3" wide ones were used more in the 50s. The 2" and later 1" were used through the 60s. White letters came along in late 60s/early 70s. So like was said with the portawalls you can switch between looks without the expense of buying new tires each time.

Re: White Letter or White Walls
Let's see, white letters or wide whites on a satin black truck with a white top. Paint it red
What would most people do? Raised white. Some neither, they'd want blackwall. There will be some who would do the whitewalls. If you are concerned what others think, you can count on some liking it and others thinking it would look better one of the other ways. You know wheel covers will mount on those rallyes? I like the rallye wheels. Just saying.

Re: White Letter or White Walls
A vote for RWL or blackwall! But either pic looks good, so you can't go wrong. I'm biased though - when it comes to whitewalls on these trucks, about the only kind I like are the skinny whites with PO1s on a swb C10. Otherwise black wall or RWLs. Again, just my opinion.

No, I didn't know. Not sure what type of covers you are talkin' about. But, the right ones could really help the white wall look. Please advise. |
