Re: 62ish parts from 1960-2000

I took the roof panel off today for some roof repair and insulation. I found out where the squirrel was hiding years ago.

Drilled it out from the top? What size was the bit?

Re: 62ish parts from 1960-2000

I used a regular harbor freight spot weld cutter. I did it on a friends truck that was easy. All the spot welds on his were evenly spaced. Not so much on mine they were random, but I will clean it up when I put it back together. The passenger side was pretty rusted out. I didn't even cut the welds on that side.

Re: 62ish parts from 1960-2000

So you drilled from the top? Even then you still wind up with holes in the gutter you have to fix right? I may be facing this too soon so just trying to get as much info I can. Maybe you have some up close pictures?

Thanks, Wade

Re: 62ish parts from 1960-2000

I cut a little deep once or twice, but the cutter I used just has a built in collapsible center punch not the center drill. So the punch acts as a guide then it just cuts the first layer around the weld.

Re: 62ish parts from 1960-2000

Thanks for the bottom of the cab. I have been trying to get out into the garage, but I have been flying nights for the past two weeks. I am supposed to have a long weekend for fathers day so hopefully I can get outside and obliterate some rust. I want to make a good dent into the top of the cab repair this weekend so I can paint and sound proof it next month. Then weld it back on. I played with some thin steel with the TIG welder last weekend. It is so controlled. It should make the job a breeze.

Re: 62ish parts from 1960-2000

Started working on the roof this morning before it got to hot. I sanded and removed the heavy rust and hit the rest with some rust converter. I will definitely be doing so metal replacement on the sides but the front and back edges should be ok. You can see how many spot welds are on these things.

Re: 62ish parts from 1960-2000

I got to enjoy a rare 70 morning. I got some great work done before the monsoon started. Flipped my cab on its back with the help of my boys. We are removing some or the undercoating so I can decide where to cut for the replacement floor.

Re: 62ish parts from 1960-2000

I have been super busy at work so not a whole lot of progress this summer, but I am getting some things done. Last weekend I tore down my 5.3 for rebuild. It is definitely not a 120k motor more like 220k. It didn't have any real damage just wear and some water in the cylinders. There are no pits though so those should clean up.

Re: 62ish parts from 1960-2000

I have also been working on cleaning up my 5.3 a little on the outside. It is still going to look fairly modern just smoothed off some. I do have a surprise for the coil pack relocation that some people may like. I am in the middle of shaving the truck intake. I love the way these look without all the stupid casting tabs in them

Re: 62ish parts from 1960-2000

Oh I did score this camper from a guy who just wanted it off his 66 so he could pull the bed. All the glass is there but the bubble windows need replaced. It fits perfect on a short bed and is tall enough that it matches the cab.

Working on the cab this afternoon. Patching little holes where the stupid squirrel lived.

Re: 62ish parts from 1960-2000

Here is some of my work from this weekend. I cut out the center because it was to thin to clean up. I have part of an extra cab I have been cutting pieces for patches out of. I found a section with a really close contour and started tacking it in. It is tuff to weld to this old metal, but the side you can see looks pretty good before grinding. I took off this week so I have some small goal with sheet metal.

Re: 62ish parts from 1960-2000

Final getting back to my truck. I have spent a lot of time on other projects but a recent purchase for this truck has really motivated me. A company released the upper cab skin last month and I was the second person to purchase one.

Re: 62ish parts from 1960-2000

Putting some Al's liner heat and noise reducer paint down before putting the new top skin on. After it cures I am going to put a little isulation in and weld the top back on. Then on to floor pans.

The first part with paint on it. Test run on the cow panel. It is a little darker than I wanted but I like it.
