Is the airbox painted?

Curious if the evaporator box on a 72 is painted? I have seen this in various conditions. I saw one restored out of the truck and it did not look like it had paint on it. Most I have seen have been painted black.

NOT painted. Many get painted because the material they're made of weathers poorly.

Does it have some kind of clearcoat on it? It looks shiny. I have all the paint off of mine and it is much lighter in color than yours.. Maybe I should hit it with some satin clear?

I put ArmorAll on it soon after it was introduced. When I restored the truck 3 years ago, I put Son Of A Gun on it. It has never gotten to the point of looking weathered. Try wetting yours with a little water. If it looks darker, it may be an ArmorAll candidate. I've seen them weathered to the point of having exposed fibers. If yours is weathered that badly, paint or clear may be the best option. I doubt paint would adhere to the box if it has ArmorAll on it though.
