No, Walter Sorrels AKA the Flying Junkman out of Columbia, MO. Looks like Inman came a little later.

Very cool, interesting their number being the same. I have heard of the flying junkman before, as a kid I read plenty of racing newspapers. We had a late model here in Georgia in the 80's. My Grandfather helped Bud Lunsford back in the day.

Re: 49/51 3100, 4bt Turbo, ZF-5, Classic
Fun stuff, yea, his racing (50s) was way before my time and almost before my parents time. Bout the only things we have left are random local news clippings from various State Fairs and towns that had dirt tracks cause he rarely lost. Lots of hands on experience with older racers, they could and did build anything.

Re: 49/51 3100, 4bt Turbo, ZF-5, Classic
Fixed up these old '49 Chevy Truck doors... painting is darn near done, just a few extras left...
Made a paint-mask vinyl that I used to put the numbers and script on the door. Still need to paint a black shadow with HOK Urethane Pin-striping paint and then putting a flat clear over it. All SPI paints except for the Maroon base which was a Nason paint.

Also finished paint/rebuild on this Quincy 325....
Lapped all the valves, had the whole thing blasted, replaced all springs and misc replaceables. Gonna have a great air compressor pump, hooking it up to a 5hp motor.

Re: 49/51 3100, 4bt Turbo, ZF-5, Classic
Laid parts out, almost ready to blast... taking trim, emblems and little disassembly... I'm thinking these fenders/hood are going to come out looking great....

Next up, attaching cab to frame and working out any firewall/transmission clearance issues...
Next big goal is to get the cab/fender/hood/doors all attached and start working out sheet metal and fitment issues.

Re: 49/51 3100, 4bt Turbo, ZF-5, Classic
Fenders didn't come out as well as I would have thought. After blasting there were alot more dents than expected and found some pretty poor patch panels someone had welded in. Lots of random thick bondo that was hiding out.
Hood seems pretty good other than errant non-factory hood ornament that made additional holes in the trim. Not going to be using a hood ornament in the future. Other than a bunch of holes in the firewall that will need plugging, the cab came out decently. The middle section inside that fits around the center rear window thou came out worse... pretty much rusted thru all the way around the window.

Re: 49/51 3100, 4bt Turbo, ZF-5, Classic
Life stuff been getting in the way, plus I've been knocking off a few shop things...
Got the 49 Chevy Truck doors done, gave one to my uncle on Christmas and put this one up in my garage... I wanted to get a bit of practice painting and have enough confidence to actually paint the whole truck... I'm pretty satisfied with how these turned out. I made a mount for it that hooks to the three bolt holes where the door handle would go... Also, like practicing with painting these doors, I'm practicing my welding as I'm planing on doing most of the body repair w/ this little 220v mig welder of mine... Plus I want a better air compressor for painting! Used some extra wheels I had floating around... a little overkill but it will roll! I put this together from a $50 craigslist find to run my welder... My sep. garage only has 120v and since we are moving in a few months I'm not real interested in spending $$ on something that won't go to the new house....
