Grimlins

Battery on my truck was dead as a doornail the other morning. The only change has been the header install. Looked and can't find anything against the headers. Years ago I had an electrical issue with a truck and the old mechanic had a buzzer with two leads and alligator clips and clipped it somewhere in the fuse box and then started trouble shooting the problem. He said when he isolated it the buzzer would go off. Anyone know where to hook it up and the technique to do this? It took this guy literally minutes to find the issue. Smartest thing I had seen in years.

You can use a test light the same way. Disconnect the negative battery cable and connect the buzzer or test light between the disconnected negative cable and the negative battery terminal. Go inside and pull fuses from the fuse block one at a time until the light goes out or the buzzer stops. Remember if you have door switches that the door being open will keep the light or buzzer on.

You might have a short in your battery. They'll test good sometimes but other times it reads junk. If your looking to test electrical in your truck I'd get a multimeter. You can get one for cheap and test grounds, look for shorts, and see a lot more going on in your truck then a test light.

Re: Grimlins

It's a common failure mode for these newer batteries. Or, do you have an HEI? If not, the coil power wire from the starter (the one on the "R" terminal) could be touching the main post on the starter. Though that usually shows up when you shut the engine off, and it doesn't stop running. Since you were in the system there, it's something to check.
