Burn us off some pics!! There were several different mounting types. If we see what you got, someone can help fix it for you!! |

Are you saying the wheel won't go over the studs?
It's possible you have a 6 lug mount with a 5 lug wheel (or vice versa).

It looks like your bracket is mounted wrong. Needs to be raised up some.

I love it (just LOVE IT) that you are a stepside and spare tire cut out guy like myself. I want my spare easy to reach yet out of the way and nothing does it like the spare tire cutout method. Lifting it up there might be a pain but I like to keep in shape. LOL If something ever happens to my truck, a LWB like yours is what I'll try to replace it with. |

Re: 1970 gmc stepside how to mount spare tire
Short and long beds use different fenders and brackets for the spare. The OP looks to have the right parts, but as posted above from the very few pics I could find... it looks like it might be mounted a little too low?
It looks like the bracket should be almost snug to the underside of the bed rail and not overtop of the step at all. (White truck is SWB, yellow LWB)

Re: 1970 gmc stepside how to mount spare tire
Here are assembly drawings showing the correct location of the spare tire mount as installed by the factory. In practice it was common to see the tires mounted lower and forward of the fender. Sometimes on the left right or both even. Most of the time this change was made to allow a stock rack, camper or similar full use of the bed.

Re: 1970 gmc stepside how to mount spare tire
yes, as indicated. ther are two side mounts. one for the long bed and on for the short bed. I'm not sure which one is used for the intermeadiat length bed (56-62).
they are different in that respect. they also differ in detail frome year to year so when shopping around its best to locate one as close to in year of manufacture as the vehicle your mounting it on. I dont know how unique those rubber gromets are but I could never find any reproduced so dont go leaving that detail stuff behind. ditto with the hardware. good luck! |

We won't hold that against you!
How about some pics of the entire truck? It looks like it's pretty nice in the fender pics!

Does anyone have a picture of how the wear iron looks mounted on the lower-inner part of the bedside? Thanks in advance!
