Re: Slammed 1966 GMCummins 12v
I know how you feel posting a build on this site. Seems the "Projects and Builds" section here is more like a blog for 3 or 4 guys.
Just build your truck and share the stuff you are proud of. I sure am following. My build thread is basically ignored on this site too. |

Thanks guys!!! its starting to get fun here now that im actually building something that looks like a truck. I've never done sheet metal body work before so after the engine and trans are done ill be on a huge learning curve. Robert i agree with you... and now that i think about it im just as bad as others for not giving feedback. I've been following your thread for while now, you do amazing work. lots of talented people on this site building cool things. theres not much of the full custom crowd in the 60-66 forums I've noticed, nothing like the 67-72 build forums, but oh well its all good. |

Re: Slammed 1966 GMCummins 12v
We are learning sheet metal as we go ourselves. Greg and I got pretty seriouse when the new floor went in and then we lost our minds and went full one off on the firewall and transmission tunnel. Once we got through that we had enough courage to go ahead and build the front clip.
Best advice I can offer you is be way out front on all the pieces you will need and incorporate them as early as possible to allow you to build them into your truck. Inter coolers and turbo 's have a way of eating valuable real estate then the niceties like AC and properly routed rack and pinions and power steering systems all start fighting for the tiny space you have left. It can be quite maddening if you don't lay it out when the build is still a bare frame. One thing I did invest in was a top shelf MIG that allowed me to run .023" wire in it. That sure makes welding and patching tin much easier. Just keep on keeping on. |

Re: Slammed 1966 GMCummins 12v
Awesome work man! I am very passionate about these motors and this gen or GM truck. I love to see the work that goes on here on this site, keeps me inspired. Keep the updates coming in watching. I’m wondering where I’m going to get the space for my ac condenser and a bunch of other items under the hood and I’m sticking with the old dodge ride height! I don’t know where you guys and your slammed rigs are going to fit anything hahaha. In hindsight I think I would have done completely custom inner fenders

thanks man, the condensor will be no problem, im putting a smaller one in front of the radiator, everything els is going under the dash. but.... i say it should be no problem cause i don't think it will, haha so that means it most likely will. the inner fenders i went with will give me a ton of space to hide those massive wheels and put most my hoses and wires inside them too. nothing better than a clean engine bay. |

Re: Slammed 1966 GMCummins 12v
Had to chop 2” out of the oil pan so it doesn’t drag the ground when slammed. I was dreading this obstical but it was actually very straight forward. Now I just have to cut a section out of the pick up tube.

Re: Slammed 1966 GMCummins 12v
My builds get ignored alot to. Probably cause I didn't do a 350 small block that's been done by 3/4 of the people on this sight. lol Very thankful for the faithful followers that have always checked in though.
In for this build cause Cummins. Closest I have to it is a 1999 Dodge 2500 with a 24v 5.9 and 5 speed. My daily driver currently and loving every minute of it. Straight piped, edge tuner, upgrade intake elbow, and a/f kit. Leveling kit and sitting on 35's.

Re: Slammed 1966 GMCummins 12v
Finished the motor mounts, what a pain they were. Glad it’s over. Also welded the oil pan back up and checked for leaks. One leak that needed fixed but other than that it held some slightly dirty mineral spirits for 24 hours without a drop. Now I have to install a drain plug.

Re: Slammed 1966 GMCummins 12v
Aired out and full of air, all the way up I got about 11” of clearance from the bottom of the chassis. So I should be good to pick my perfect ride height. I’m really hoping the weight of the truck slams it a bit more than it is aired out. There’s another inch there which is perfect. I don’t want it directly on the ground in case of a air failure while driving (which I’ve had with my Lincoln) it’s nice to be able to steer it and load it on a flat bed if need be.

Re: Slammed 1966 GMCummins 12v
For those keeping score, when I bought the Cummins it came with a 727 torqflight trans (3 speed non lock up converter) which wasn’t going to cut it for me, so I searched and searched for a 2 wheel drive 47rh from a 95 Cummins. Fairly rare item up here in Canada since everything is always 4 wheel drive. I’ll be doing a full rebuild and some slight mods to this in case I throw some power at it down the road.

Wire wheeled the block after it came back from the machine shop, full rotating assembly is ready to roll. I think I’ll start the rebuild next weekend.

Chevy orange?
Are you concerned about the smaller capacity of oil the pan now holds?

As for the oil pan, I measured the volume I took out by filling the cut off piece with water. I’ll be loosing 1.5 litres. But I will have the pick up tube half inch closer to the bottom of the pan than stock sooooo, I’m guessing I’ll only be out about .5 litres/quarts for you Americans when it’s all said and done. So I’m sure I’ll be able to “over fill” the capacity buy half a litre and not notice any difference. This isn’t a high performance build so sucking the pan dry “shouldn’t” be a problem. |

also i should have mentioned, the factory capacity is 12 quarts/liters so at most loosing half or a full quart shouldn't be a problem........ i hope lol my buddy did mention if its to much of a lose an axillery oil tank coming off the side of the pan can be added, i hope it doesn't come to that but it is an option. i have the room. |

Re: Slammed 1966 GMCummins 12v
You dont want to overfill the pan and have the crank spinning in the oil.
Doesn't sound like, at 12L capacity, that you will be missing too much oil from the factory design.

Beauty! You should definitely get those engine parts in the Cummins red! That’s what I would suggest. Good looking work! Keep at it

you know, I've been told from a few people to do it in the cummins red. i guess what it will come down to is what colour of powder the powder coaters have. |

Re: Slammed 1966 GMCummins 12v
Started the motor today, cleaning and cleaning and cleaning and...... you get the rest. This is a stock rebuild so I took out the trusty plasti-gauge to check clearances. Nothing to crazy here, stock new bearings/seals rebuild, new turbo cartridge, reman injection pump. Only thing that’s going over board is the injectors. They’re big, lots of black smoke will happen.

Re: Slammed 1966 GMCummins 12v
Fresh cartridge for the turbo, the one that came with it was damaged so a new one was needed. The idiot (previous owner) put a ratchet strap hook in the comp side and chipped 3 fins.
