I have done them many ways, engine running and followed by the mess of oil splattering all over, follow book, but the easiest and best way I have found is to bring the lifter down all the way either loosen or tighten till the pushrod just starts to have resistance then tighten 1/2 turn and then move on to the next one. JMO
