I still go back and forth on the tailgate lettering. It is super bright. When I look at it in pictures, it's too bright. When it's indoors, it's too bright. When it gets outside, the blue gets really bright and the lettering actually calms down a bit. I like it then. Either way, the boy loves it so I guess that's a win.

Re: Son's 68 c10 Short Bed
quick question for you. when you were installing the bed wheel tubs, did you put any sealer between the bed floor and the tub flange? or did you seam seal that joint after the tubs were installed? TIA
that paint is looking awesome btw. Al |

Re: Son's 68 c10 Short Bed
We used mastic. It is what is used between the seams on pro-panel sheets when you assemble a metal building. Not sure if you can picture what I am talking about or if you have access to any. Also, not sure if that's the best way, we just have access to it and use it in applications like this.

Re: Son's 68 c10 Short Bed
The Video says it all, he is one Happy Camper as he should be. He put a lot of work into the truck which makes it even more meaningful to him. Have you purchased the Rev wheels yet and if so who did you purchase from or who will you purchase from when the time comes ? I forgot about Dad who obviously deserves some serious credit here also!

Re: Son's 68 c10 Short Bed
Today, we finally got around to color sanding and buffing the bed sides and tailgate. I think the reflection picture of the boy is pretty cool. Anyway, I’m happy with it.

Man what a great thread. You guys really put your covid downtime to some good old fashioned father son time use. The truck looks fantastic.

Re: Son's 68 c10 Short Bed
Thank you. We’ve definitely been putting the time in. Hood is painted as of yesterday. We will probably cut and buff it tomorrow and get it put on, and I think he will be able to bring the truck home.

Re: Son's 68 c10 Short Bed
So is this your shop y'all are working in? I remember a while back you showing us the other truck your brother and his son we're working on. Tell us about your setup if you don't mind?

Re: Son's 68 c10 Short Bed
My dad owns a hot rod shop - Wild West Street Rods is the name of it. He was kind enough to let us in the shop to work and provide his assistance/expertise.

Re: Son's 68 c10 Short Bed
I've been following this truck along, and the truck alone is awsome, but added the father - son project puts it over the top.
...and the red lettering on the tailgate, it's perfect! stands out, but not overdone. ...and the paint? OMG that is amazing ![]() ![]() I'm going to send a PM on Mark K side molding... Kevin

Just wanted to give a quick update. Exciting day - the truck is home! I will post a link to a video and tell the nightmare of a story for the first real drive later.....
Happy 4th of July!

Re: Son's 68 c10 Short Bed
The attached link is a video of the maiden voyage home. Right after the video stops, the truck spit a transmission cooler line and puked the majority of the fluid all over it. I got him shut down; fortunately, before it hurt the transmission. We fixed it on the side of the road, filled it with fluid, and limped it back to the shop where we spent the next 2 hours cleaning transmission fluid off of literally EVERYTHING. I don’t think it hurt any of the paint. So we were fortunate. https://youtu.be/NU5nu1343cc

Re: Son's 68 c10 Short Bed
Awesome. I'm sure he was grinning ear to ear on his first drive on the road. That color really works on this truck and it's something for all three of you to be proud of for a long time.
So what's on the punch list? Any lessons learned?

Passenger side window is really hard to roll down. I tried to re-use the old regulator and it isn't going to work. So, I ordered a new one and need to replace it. Driver's side window isn't working properly. On the one piece glass kit, you have to trim the slide on the top door hinge or it impacts the track. Apparently, I was too conservative when I did this and the door wont close with the window down. So, I need to pull the hinge and fix that. I need to order a new windshield. The one that is on it is fine and I never planned on replacing it, but it really detracts from the rest of the truck now that it is all done. Install the side trim when it gets in. Get it aligned and replace the front tires. Probably the most important part, stop stressing out so much when I let him drive it. As far as learning, honestly, since I did another one of these about 3 years ago, things went relatively smoothly. However, I regret not buying a shorter steering column. Also, it ended up being a WAY nicer truck than I intended and I spent A LOT more money than I expected.

And yes, I know what you mean. I started out just thinking about leaving the body as-is and redoing the chassis and now look what I've done. But even when I've tried to save a few bucks and buy a less expensive part, I usually ended up regretting it.

You're right about the less expensive parts. This is especially important when referencing fuel lines. Just buy the good stuff. I learned that one for sure.

Re: Son's 68 c10 Short Bed
My son took his truck to youth group tonight. I was “out and about” and had to swing by to check on his choice of parking. He did good.
The yellow ‘71 is my nephew.

Re: Son's 68 c10 Short Bed
This morning we got the slide that goes through the top hinge on the drivers door clearing the one piece door glass; so he can actually close his door now with the window rolled down. Had to pull the door three times which wasn’t fun. All good now though.
Also, I have no pictures because everything is crammed behind the seat, but this afternoon we got the stereo stuff in. I’m not a stereo guy by any means so I called a buddy to come over and look at the stuff I had and point me in the right direction. He shows up and goes, “Yeah, I’ll be back in a little while.” Shows up about a half hour later with a new sub, a second amp, and a bunch of cables and connectors and all sorts of gadgets. Refuses to let me pay him for any of it too. About 6 hours later we were done. Again, I’m no stereo guy but it is stupid loud. Sounds really clean and crisp too. I’m not even trying to hide my jealousy anymore when it comes to this truck.

Re: Son's 68 c10 Short Bed
My son has been putting some miles on his truck. No problems to speak of. I got both window's working properly as of last night and it is scheduled for an alignment tomorrow. Still need to buy a windshield and front tires. Also, still patiently waiting for the trim.
He sent me these pictures yesterday...
