Bolts!
Long story short... my engine build/swap turned into pulling my front clip and stripping down the front frame.
I am at the assembly stages and exploring options on how to deal with the hardware. Its a small thing, but not a detail I want to overlook with how much time I have into this so far. I called 3 local companies that do black oxide coating... "commercial work only". Anyone have the name of a company they have sent their hardware off to and had it cleaned/black oxide coated? How much was it? AMK bolt kits (available at various restoration parts suppliers) are pretty good kits. They come prepackaged and nicely labelled. They have pretty much every kit you can think of for the 1st Gen Camaros, ...and they do have a listing for the trucks ; ) link below.

I work at a machine shop that makes wellhead equipment for the oilfield. We get lots of equipment coated. There are many different types of coating out there.
Nitride is a process that turns the metal black and also hardens the very outer layer of the metal. There is also phos and oil, just a surface treatment that protects items from corrosion. But I deal with these people on a daily. I have not gotten to a point of restoration with my truck YET as it really runs and drive pretty damn good - for the money I have to throw at it But here is their website. Worth a call. Shady Rascal gave the name and location of a shop he uses that does low minimum charge plating. Others on the thread talk about checking feasibility of shipping to the plating shop. You may want to revive the thread to ask how it worked out for the folks who expressed interest in doing that. |

I had my original hardware black zinc plated. Some clear too. I may have preferred original zinc phosphate, but luck has it I'm really happy with the zinc plating. It's dark and looks great with black powder coat. I ran with zinc plating because the place is local, and I refused to send out the hardware. Too much work and impossible to replace.
Old hardware has to be spotless or the results will be poor. Any indication of rust will reveal itself after it's finished, lucky for me that was 5-6 bolts of well too many pieces I'm not certain how durable zinc plating is, but I took a sledge hammer to a cab mount shim, and could barely make out any damage. IMO the black oxide on replacement hardware looks awesome, perhaps best of all. It's dark and consistent. Only a guess how durable, though with today's technology it might be very good. I've bought a kit etc., it's nice stuff. A sample of zinc plating next to replacement hardware. I imagine the appearance is the same or close for anyone using a hot bath oxide process. Course original (zinc phosphate) was lighter than all of em.

I ordered an underhood kit from Classic Industries and so far have been very happy with it. I'm just in the process of putting the truck back together and all the parts came listed and that has been a great help as I wasn't the one who took the poor truck apart.
My only complaints would be that it didn't come with the 2 big front fender bolts that bolt through the bottom of the inner fender (supposedly 7/16" bolts with 2 1/4" washers), nor with new clips for bolting the inner fenders in (easily available from an autobody supply store) but it does have the bolts! Original vs AU-VE-CO bolts , AU-VE-CO makes all the nuts bolts and screws also the 72 door panel clips . you can buy a box of 50 on Amazon for $20.00 with free shipping also the fender nuts can be bought at any Lowe's home store for a few dollars.

I ended up going with the caswell plating kit. It seemed that no matter what kit I went with I would end up having to reuse some hardware and would need to plate it anyways. I will post up the results when I get started.

I've been doing some black phosphate coating at home. Basically parkerizing. I've done hardware, brackets, linkages, shift levers, etc. It's pretty easy, it's cheap and looks great. There are lots of parts that need protected but IMO don't look right painted.
