Correct screws for heater/AC control cables?

I'm trying to get the heater working in my '69 C10, I noticed the screws that secure the cable ends to the control levers in the dash are all missing. Could someone tell me what size these screws are? are they a machine screw or some kind of self tapping?

I believe they are called push nuts or push on star keepers

Try this: https://www.lmctruck.com/1967-72-che...and-components

Most good hardware stores carry those. Ace has boxes of automotive fasteners in the section with all the regular fasteners.

There they are! I always forget to check LMC truck. I think it's the boring black and white catalogs.

So was that the screw-heater cable $ .65 or the push nut $ .45 you needed, just curios . I see it on page 97 LMC. It makes me laugh thinking back to the early eighties reaching down under the dash moving them (broken or just hanging there) cables with my fingers,,, defrost?, no problem just reach alittle further and throw the lever.

I'm hoping all I need is the $.65 screws. I can't tell what the push nut is supposed to do?

At the end of each levers there's a post, not sure if that's the proper name, and at the end of the cable the wire that comes out has a circle, it slides down the post then
followed by the push nut which holds it in place, by spring tension is how I recall. The screws hold the cables them self in place. I can think it but man I have a hard time writing it, lol. Hope that helped.

Re: Correct screws for heater/AC control cables?

Hmm, wish I had known about those before I placed the order! I looked up a picture in Google images and didn't see any nuts on the one I found. Hopefully the local hardware store can help with that. I was mainly concerned about getting the right screws so as not to cross thread/strip or crack anything.

You don't really need those push on nuts. If the cable is right it won't come off.

Re: Correct screws for heater/AC control cables?

If you are referring to the screws that secures the cable sheathing at the controller those can be sourced at a hardware store, but beware I believe you have 2 different size screws if memory serves me correctly.
As wrenchbender said you really don't need the push nuts....but as your cables become dusty and dry overtime they are harder to operate and could indeed come off or worse would be to ride up on the post and with undue leverage break the pot metal post.

I would put them on, you can get a whole box of various sizes on amazon for cheap, they are shown in metric sizes but a size close will work on your controller

Here is a thread I posted back in 2006 on how to remove the retainers/keepers without breaking them.
