Winter project #1, install sound deadener and carpet. Removed seat and old rubber mat and this is what I found, all in all not bad I think. Couple of minor speed holes in the floor as you can see. Will patch with sheet metal and rivet down, question is what to use to seal? Looks like PO has used some kind of black substance, anyone know what this might be?
Also found wide open unused hole into engine compartment, will seal that as well.
Have a carpet kit on the way from LMC , does anyone know how much of the floor this will cover, do I need to remove the fuel tank as well?

Not wanting to throw water on your parade I think I would weld patches in those holes. I feel that doing it the way you said will allow moisture to get into it and cause more problems down the road.

Thats the factory installed sound deadener. Asphalt impregnated felt.

Kootenay64,

Insted of rivieting and if you don't have access to a welder, you can shape patches and use panel adheasive which would be better than pop rivets.

If you pickup up a Harbor Freight Air Punch/Flange Tool ($39.00) it will allow you to make a flush patch with sheet metal and use 3-M brand of panel adheavsive. Then fill prime and paint as normal.

agree ^^ just bond with adhesive if you can't weld in proper patches. Pop rivets are just complicating it

Exactly what I'm thinking for now with the formed patches. Need to keep things simple for now, plan on full resto in the coming few years and looks like some floor panels will need to be welded in at that time.

Received the carpet kit from yesterday and scoped things out, looks like fule tank removal will be required - no big deal.

That's a lot of work for a couple of pounds. I think you are supposed to dimple them for strength. Might be easier to hit the bathroom before the race,
