Question Registration says 2007, VIN says 2006

My friend's GMC Sierra says 2007 on his registration but my free VIN search says 2006. How to tell for sure? Will being right on the cusp of generations cause me trouble with parts etc.?

Re: Registration says 2007, VIN says 2006

As for parts, they have what they call Classics. I believe that was for the first half of 2007 and the trucks were part of the 1999-2006 year group. The last half of 2007 had the trucks that were part of the 2007-2013 year group. Just look at your front end design. If the Sierra looks like the 1999-2006 Sierras, then you’re in the Classic category.

Since 2007 was the transition year and if you know you’re in the Classic category, I would just search and buy parts for a 2006 Sierra.

Yeah the free VIN services don't distinguish on the split years. I also had an 07 ( chevy in my case ) classic, that VIN search said was 06.

Re: Registration says 2007, VIN says 2006

2007 classic T800 was an odd model. There are more than a few parts that are specific to that year truck.

Look at the compliance sticker on the LH doorjamb or door for the actual build date... MM/YY.
Usually a model year runs from August of the year prior to July of the actual stated model year. August - December 2004 and January to July 2005 builds were 2005 model year. My 2005 was September 2004 build IIRC.

2007 was really weird since, I believe, they built T800 and T900 trucks from August 2006 through at least May of 2007. I might be wrong about the start of T900 production... it might've been delayed somewhat and the T800 might've been built right through July.
Keith Seymore might be able to say since he worked at GM in that timeframe.

Re: Registration says 2007, VIN says 2006

I'm a proud owner of an 07 classic. It was built in July 2006. The owners manual and window sticker call it a Sierra classic. When ordering parts I just say 06. Although most parts stores will have it listed as 07 then model sierra classic. Thare are some thing that are 06 07 only like the seat harness plugs. Same wireing differt pin out and plug. The best way to say it is 06 and half. Then 07 up. Kida like 64 and half mustangs. I bet there titled as 65s. I aslo have 99 tahoe classic. It's fun owning carry over years. Haha

Re: Registration says 2007, VIN says 2006

GM changed all of that starting month data. The 3rd week of July is the start of production. SOP. The last day of June is the end of production. With a lot of variations.
