Shock Original 1966 GMC K10
Photos of the shocks removed from Suburban, looks like original to truck. First photos are of the front shocks. Photos: 1st.-overall of front shocks; 2nd.- part number, both same number; 3rd.- build date, 355-65, 355 day of 1965, think Dec. 20,1965; 4th.- build location, Dayton Ohio; 5th.- bolt head marking, grade 8. Color of shocks to be discussed more soon, Note: The shock part numbers for Chevrolet K10s are reported by forum member to be the same. Last edited by aotte1; 02-16-2021 at 11:05 PM. |

Rear Shocks, 1966 GMC K10. Shocks:
1st. - Overall Rear Shocks, bolts show zinc plating; 2nd. & 3rd.- -photos of original color under outer shield; 4th.- bolt head marking, same as front except grade 5. Have not cleaned these yet, date code is 122-65. The color of the shocks is under further review. Looking at the black paint color over the under color (maybe gray). Plan to post NOS stabilizer shock to show color for comparison. Last edited by aotte1; 02-16-2021 at 11:06 PM. |

Re: 1966 GMC K10 Suburban Project
I had no clue that GMCs had different color codes. Learn something new every day!

Re: 1966 GMC K10 Suburban Project
Christian,
Information from very knowledge member provided, that GMC used 4 number color codes, and had many more colors available. Still looking for summary list of GMC paint colors for 1965 and 1966. These 4 digit numbers may be found on the firewall, and/or under the hood. Last edited by aotte1; 02-16-2021 at 10:54 PM. |

GMC Seat Belts Suburban
Photos of 1966 GMC suburban seat belts: Photos 1-4 show interior, photo 5 shows the support bracket for center seat belts, in second row seat. Photo shows the top side of bracket that was next to plywood floor. Will post more photos of other seat belt brackets used under the floor pan, and seat belts themselves, in next post. Re: 1966 GMC K10 Suburban Project
Was that the original engine in the truck? You are going to use the 351E engine? If so, you are lucky to have the power steering pulleys! If not, I want to buy them from you! My air cleaner on my 351e is an oil bath cleaner...and is original to the truck. I can post a picture if needed.

Re: 1966 GMC K10 Suburban Project
RTD,
Yes, 351E V6 is original to suburban, and it also has dealer installed AC from when new, I think. Date codes on it are December 1065. Will post some photos of it. They will be some older photos, all the engine external accessory parts are packed away right now. They are inventoried per container. The other 351E V6 engine, from a 1966 C30 dump truck, has 4 speed with PTO. If I remember correctly it has the optional 4 speed transmission. It is locked up, trying to free cylinder two cylinders, soaking with rust penetrating oil no luck. It is low mileage, under 50K. To bad it must have got wet some how. Cylinders stuck are ones where exhaust valves were open. Lesson, if storing, losses rockers, storage oil in cylinders. It is very original little touched. Some good some bad, e.g. oil in it looked like partial sludge, maybe from moisture? Will get back on PS. Like the 351 magnum exhaust manifolds, they are big! Also, strange that the intake is a single plane design. Last edited by aotte1; 03-13-2021 at 12:22 PM. |

Re: 1966 GMC K10 Suburban Project
That's awesome. I really like the 305e. I have one on my 1964 GMC 1 ton dually with a 4 speed Sm420 in it. I just need the crank and fan double pulley, so if you see one let me know! Will be following along for the engine alone and the rest of the cool burb!

Some bolts and parts cleaned. Cleaned in media cabinet, using 120 grit garnet media. Buy media in 50 lbs bags.

Re: 1966 GMC K10 Suburban Project
Parts ceramic coated. Coat with ceramic medium, to preserve the parts. It provides a very tough coating if done following instructions, minimize moisture. Low humidity, media clean 120 grit, ceramic costing ready and following grit blasting immediately coat. Photos 1, 2, and 3 are general, showing bolts, washers, and few other parts. These parts are for rear shocks, transfer case mounting bolts, etc. Last two photos are of the upper rear shock bolts ( 4WD). Head marking “C” grade 5.

Re: 1966 GMC K10 Suburban Project
66’ GMC K10 Axles
Following are photos from 1966 GMC Suburban K10, FWD. Dana 44 closed knuckle front axle, and Dana rear axle. Gear ratio is 3.54. Some photos may be repeat, providing as a summary of axle information. The last photo shows a unique feature on GMCs, it is the bracket, that the front axle u-bolts attach to. This GMC bracket is much taller, then the same on chevrolet 4WDs. Re: 1966 GMC K10 Suburban Project
Additional photos on axles. The first photo shows front Dana 44 axle being checked out. Going to need total rebuild. Going to take some time to acquire the needed parts. More on rebuild later. Photos 2,3, and 4 are of 1977 Dana 44, that will be used until original is rebuilt. Dana 44 front axle component were upgraded over the years, 1976 was one of those upgrade years. The rear axle backing plates in photos 3 and 4, are 1/2 ton HD brakes with 2 3/4” shoes, they were standard on later 4WDs. Last photo shows original lock out hubs, with dirt on them, from 65’ 4WD.

Re: 1966 GMC K10 Suburban Project
Springs, Shackle, and U-bolts
1966 GMC K10 suburban suspension information for springs, shackles, shocks, and U-bolts. History on suspension parts, appears to be fairly complete, without to much damage from use, or modification. Likely not used for past 30 years, and from south east. Some of these photos below are likely repeats from earlier post, contained here for suspension subject. A few of photos for subject completeness will be from 1964 Chevy K10. Last photo shows penetrating oil that works, and very worn rear shackle from 1964 K10. Showing before photos, as reference that may help. Last edited by aotte1; 04-10-2021 at 01:15 PM. |

Some close up details of rear shackle, its retaining pin, and pin removal. Last photo shows punch/hammer used to drive pin out, after nut removed, DRIVE OUT FROM NUT END!
