GMC v6 5 speed

I know it's probably been done but can't see where anyone has on here with a GMC v6 I'm planning on installing a t5 from a 89 s10 in my 62 305 v6 and using the astro clutch and modifying the clutch disc or jeep input shaft, just wondering has anyone done the with there v6? Seeing how gmc uses there own flat disc unique I'll post as I go , looking to cruise faster than 55

Yes Jacob did that and I'm doing my other truck with a 700r4 but keeping this one a manual finally found a t5

I've been wanting to do some sort of 5 speed swap in my 3/4 ton as well. In for the build

Re: GMC v6 5 speed

Matt,

I did not do the 5 speed but, I did a New Process MY6 NP440 4 speed overdrive. I followed the article from Classic Trucks which was written by Brad54 (I think that's his Name from the forum).

It bolted on just fine. I only had to have the input bearing turned down and have a new driveshaft made. It replaced my SM420.

The overdrive is .73 and pretty well suited to the V6 I feel.

They can be tough to find and you need to get a complete unit with the shifter and rods and mounting bracket.

Another possible option on a 5 speed is the AX15

Re: GMC v6 5 speed

Yeah I've looked all over for a my6 no luck.i even talked to you a few times about it, so I finally found a t5 so I'm going that route .79 overdrive on the t5 just wondering.if I'm.the first one to do it on the v6 just waiting for the astro clutch to come in them I'll.have to modify the disc I'm sure , I already pre fit the trans to bellhousing fits nice onto the pilot bearing just need to trim.the collar

Re: GMC v6 5 speed

I recall only doing about 70mph and the tach was reading about 25-2700rpms. The redline on these engines are about 3400rpms so I had room to push it if I wanted to.
I'm looking forward to your swap and seeing the results, should be fun.

Re: GMC v6 5 speed

Well the clutch came in it's AutoZone (don't know if I trust it may order a luk.one) but looks like will bel fine! Plenty of room against the flywheel disc sits flat on it! Test fitted on my spare engine plenty of room for the bearing ,had to take off 1/2 inch from the collar is all, I think it will work the hard part is gonna be the driveline because this truck is a short bed and x frame, I'll cross that bridge when I come to it! Here are some pics

Really like your truck Matt, I would imagine the driving experience with the 5 speed will be a revelation.

Re: GMC v6 5 speed

Right on ! Im sure you will like the swap.. well worth the effort. Drive shaft shouldn't be an issue. My 60 is a long bed with a one piece driveshaft. I had it cut down at a local shop , no issues with the X- frame or driveshaft tunnel. Keep it up !

Re: GMC v6 5 speed

All in just waiting on fluid, driveline turned out to be easy , my truck is a short bed , needed a 52 inch driveline for the next guy doing it. go to the wrecking yard find a 98-2003 Chevy /GMC s10 blazer 4 door make sure it's 2 wheel drive and the driveline fits perfectly! Just needed a conversion u joint I'll.update after the test drive, I also added a gps speedometer and vintage rpm tach turned out Cool IMHO

Great Job and thanks for providing those other details on the driveshaft. Love how the dash with gauges looks!

Looks good. I took my shifter knob to a trophy awards shop had them laser etch the 5 speed pattern in an old knob that was very worn.
