Re: 1984 c10 barn find

Awesome job on the c notch . I never even thought of doing that I was going to order a kit but that looks like it worked out great. Thanks for the idea!

From everything I've researched, and people I've talked to, this is stronger than any kit you can buy if you do it right. Good luck!

Re: 1984 c10 barn find

Haven't been here for awhile but I've got quite a bit done to the truck so I guess I'll give a quick update. Last summer this truck was my daily driver. It worked great but by the fall it was leaking oil badly. I thought about rebuilding the engine, but I got a better deal when a now good friend of mine gave me a low milage and tight 305 and helped me put it in the truck at his place. I can't remember why, but for some reason we ended up using one car manifold and one truck manifold, the engine was out of a 73 caprice I think. Anyway I upgraded to headers and duals with no crossover and put some thrush turbo mufflers and turn downs on it. Soon I'll be putting air shocks on the back, as well as a new gas tank and some general maintenance to get it back on the road. However I'm working on long shifts away from home this summer, and it's proving more and more difficult to get things done during the short periods I am home. I'll have pictures to come of the truck soon. In the meantime, I figured I'd post my other 2 non chevy projects just for fun. My 1956 pontiac star chief catalina and my 1975 vw van.

Re: 1984 c10 barn find

As promised, some pics of the new exhaust setup. I still have to change some of my plug wires for clearance and figure out what to do with my power steering pump bracket. I'm thinking of making a spacer for between the header and the backside of the bracket and using one of the factory manifold studs as shown. Anyone else have a solution?

I forgot to mention I got a more suitable tailgate too!
instead of I think it looks a lot better, but I've always had a soft spot for tailgates that don't match the colour.

Re: 1984 c10 barn find

Hey, I haven't posted on here for awhile, but stay tuned for a drivetrain swap. I plan on doing the actual swap next winter/spring, and I'll be gathering up parts and ideas as it gets closer to that time. First, an update. I haven't done much other than drive it since my last post. I found a stock radio with a cassette player and put that in, fixed a rotten rubber gas line, and I still have a leaking axle seal (I'm planning on swapping rear ends so I never bothered fixing it yet).

For the drivetrain swap I found a 2002 2500hd 2wd cclb, with a 6.0l and nv4500 5 speed. I'll be swapping that in during next winter spring, but I'd like some advice from people that have done similar swaps on the best places to get parts and what stock parts I can reuse (the computer for example, can the stock one just be flashed and reused?). I'll need mounts, wiring, headers, driveshaft, etc. Any and all advice would be appreciated. Here's a few pics of what will be the donor truck. Its currently my daily driver, that's why I'm waiting until next winter to start the swap. It used to be a DOT truck, and the interior is VERY dirty, but it works great and has lots of power, and it loves 3rd gear lol. It should work great in my c10!

Re: 1984 c10 barn find

So here's my first round of questions. As I said I'm daily driving this truck so I can't really tear anything apart to get the answers myself, but some of you on here must know.

1. Did the make a clutch pedal assembly for c10's that used a slave cylinder setup, or were they all mechanical linkage?

2. Any recommendations for a speedometer setup? I've seen boxes that use the electrical output from the newer trans and have an electric motor that drives the speedo cable for the old speedometer, is this the best way to go?

3. Anyone know how many splines the output is on a 2wd 2002 Silverado HD with nv4500? Is there any chance I can reuse the driveshaft in my c10 with some modification?

There's going to be more questions coming. Ideally I'd like to have as many parts ready as I can before the swap and have as much info going into this as I can. Also, aside from some accessory noise, the 6.0l and nv4500 are working great while I'm daily driving the 2500hd!

Regarding the clutch, my 83 K20 has a hydraulic clutch from the factory.

That's what I was hoping for, thanks. I've only ever seen the other kind.

Re: 1984 c10 barn find

On Thursday I learned a lesson about safety the hard way. I was working under my 3/4 ton truck when it fell off the jacks and pinned me under the frame. The frame wasn't touching the ground, the full weight of that corner of the truck was on me. The neighbors babysitter heard me yelling and got my fiance, Emily, out of the house. She jacked it up enough for me to get out. Things could've been alot worse, and I'm very very lucky to have walked away from that. I've got lots of pulled muscles and bruises, and some pinched nerves, but nothing permanent or broken. Keep in mind everyone, you never think it'll happen to you, but it can. Always take a minute to think about what you're doing when you get under a car. We all do it so often, we tend to forget just how dangerous it really is. Have fun, and be safe!

Re: 1984 c10 barn find

I haven't posted much on here since my accident with the truck falling on me, because honestly I lost my ambition to work on anything for a few months. Then I decided to get married, and started working on restoring my fiance's VW, since my c10 is still on the road with the sbc in it and works fine as is. I'm glad I did that, because it slowly got me back into working on cars again. With her car being almost back to life, I'm now getting back into working on the C10, and even just did a small roadtrip in it. I've gathered up a few parts and think I've figured out what I want to buy for aftermarket parts when I've saved up enough. I'll get back to posting updates as I go, but up until now nothing has really changed apart from regular maintenance. Here's some recent pics, one is from a day a few weeks ago I hauled some gravel (I was dragging the trailer hitch on my way home ).

I just read this.
You're a lucky lucky boy.
Two neighbors died from that kind of accident when I was a kid. One of them was a friend's teenage brother. We found him under the Charger he was working on and he was obviously gone. The other guy was old enough to know better... working on a lifted dump bed without cribbing that fell on him. That kinda stuff stays with you.
I'm exceedingly careful around stuff that's lifted off the tires and stuff that could fall on me. Jack stands, chocks, cribbing, etc.

I was told when taking off a tire, put the rim under the frame.
Also thanks for your post about the spindle clearance. Have a great day!
