'67 - '68 Repro/Aftermarket Cab Floor Carpet Question

Got a question for my fellow '67-'68 guys concerning the molded carpets you can buy out there. Other year guys are of course welcome to chime in but this is concerning an issue with the hand brake cable for the parking brake on 67 and 68s.

About 5 years or so back I redid most of the interior of my '68, including the carpet. I can't remember exactly where/who's I picked at this time but I made sure that it said it was good to go for '68s. It's a nice, thick carpet and I'm happy with it.... mostly. The one thing it wasn't shaped/molded for is where the cable for the hand operated parking brake comes through the bottom part of the cab. I've posted a couple of pics showing what I'm talking about. Because of this, it causes the carpet to not want to make it all the way to the driver side cab wall near the vent. It's a little exaggerated in the pics because I currently have the hand brake mechanism unmounted and lying on the floor but it definitely still causes an issue when mounted under the dash where it belongs.

Does anyone out there know of a vendor that makes a nice molded carpet that takes this into account for the '67-'68s? I can just cut my current carpet for it of course but I'm no seamstress and it won't be near as nice as if someone out there has a carpet made for this.

I have factory carpet in my 68. I could take a pic of what they did originally there.

Just an option. How about instead of splitting, make a hole and use a grommet like for the dimmer switch.

Don't cut the carpet, as, over time, it will fray.. Instead, use a soldering gun to melt the hole.. I just put new carpet in my '71.. Instead of using the factory bolts to mount the seat, I used studs.. Install the studs and lay in the carpet.. Find the stud and melt the holes.. Do the same with your cable.. Burn the hole and install the grommet.

They didn't put too much effort into it at the factory. Just a little cut.

Ha, nope they didn't!

These guys have some nice ideas on here, I would have maybe tried some of their methods for the seat bolt holes and what not back when I put the carpet in had I have thought about it or known.

Looks like a nice fit. Also looks like it is cut a little lower at the top and wouldn't cause an issue with the cable.

Hey C10 Driver, I've been revisiting this thread now that I've got my hand brake bracket back up off the floor and was looking over everything. I was again admiring just how nice that carpet fits your truck in your picture.... then it dawned on me combined with something I realized when I was under my truck a couple of weeks ago and I noticed something.

I think I may have something funky going on with my truck. I noticed the transmission hump in your '68 looks really low compared to mine. I have included a photo of my truck's interior before I redid it a few years ago because the lighter colored carpet shows the size of my transmission hump a lot better than the current black carpet installed. It looks a lot taller than yours! I also noticed when I was crawling around on the bottom that my transmission hump has a bolted on cover...... is this normal for a stock 2WD automatic in '68?

Anyone else that may be able to shed some light on this, feel free to chime in. If I end up purchasing another new carpet, I want to make sure it fits as nice as C10 Driver's does in his pic this time.

If I recall correctly, the ones with the bolt-in high hump were either 4 speed on the floor or 4wd...(or both) the 3 speed and automatics had integral low hump floor.

That is kind of what I was thinking...... which means my truck has had some interesting changes over the years. I never did have an SPID, it was long gone from the glove box door when I got it but I do know that the VIN plate on the cab is obviously a 2WD (C). However I know the auto in it is not original because it is a TH350 and only the 2 speed powerglide and TH400s were available in '68. So it's very possible someone ditched the manual and stuck an original 3 spd auto column in the truck....

There's a multitude of possibilities for trucks that have been around for this long.
many of the 3 peed on the column were changed to either floor shift or auto when the linkage wore out in the column...
nothing wrong with the high hump version...it just, obviously, takes different carpet to fit correctly...

Ha, right? Question with that is, don't most of the K10 carpets available come with holes in them for at least the transfer case shift lever? Or is there a high hump carpet available out there that doesn't have any holes precut in the hump area?

This could be a possibility as well..... My VIN does also call out that the truck was originally a V8 truck. I also know that there are no holes in the bolt on cover, it's just a solid cover.

I did notice that LMC's carpet selection says the high hump carpet's are for "2WD MODELS WITH FLOOR SHIFT • ALL 4WD • ALL BIG BLOCK (HIGH HUMP)"

It also looks as if ACC doesn't offer (or at least not any longer) a carpet for high hump trucks, only small. Bummer.

Good find, I actually was just looking at that site when you responded. I found the exact match for what I want, description reads "1967-1972 GMC Full Size Truck, Standard Cab Carpet, 400 Transmission, High Tunnel". This one is for the gas tank still in cab behind the seat as they list another that reads the same except it adds "gas tank removed" to the description. You can tell in the picture that the carpet comes back further compared to this one as well (I love it when vendors have accurate pictures of their products.... helps a lot many times). Good prices here vs. the other vendors as well!

I have it bookmarked and will be picking it up in the near future.

I will then have a very lightly used low tunnel carpet for sale if anyone will be interested at that point.

If your truck came with a TH400 originally, then I believe there will be an extra hole in the firewall somewhere for the power wire for the electric kickdown switch. I started a thread a while back trying to figure out the location of that hole on a '68, but there was never a definitive answer.

That actually reminds me that I found what I believed was the leftover wire for the 400 kickdown switch back when I was changing out the engine and front light harness, cleaning everything up under the hood. I ended up using the hole/grommet that it was in for the power signal wire for my aftermarket fogs. My truck probably did have a TH400 in it when it was new and the auto shift column and solid transmission hump cover are correct for it.

I guess that begs the question; did ALL TH400s come with high hump or did only BBC with TH400s come with high trans humps and trucks with SBC/TH400 combos came with small trans humps? I'm wondering if my truck may have originally been a BBC truck (it has a 400 SBC in it now).

Interesting. Where is that hole located on your truck? Do you by any chance have a photo of its location?
