18:20 min mark Guess the repair, bodywork and paint made the distance on this one. Kind of surprised me to see the lq9 but I dont watch those much.

That’s definitely a nice truck.
When I see the old Chevy trucks go across the auction block I always wonder how many of the parts are reproduction and what really drove the price that high. Also irritating they go that high, people base their prices off what one vehicle sold for at Barrett Jackson. Which in turn makes the market go up. Ugh

Re: Barrett-Jackson 1972 Cheyenne Super rebuilt lq9 $85k
People base their prices off of what they see on the internet. The internet is how the popularity of these trucks became so widespread, and values climbed. Barrett Jackson just shows it on TV (& the internet).
A buyer who spends that much can afford to have a Cheyenne Super tailgate handle cover custom made from sterling silver That is one nicely done truck. It could be 50% reproduction and it wouldn't matter. It doesn't even have to be an authentic Cheyenne Super SWB, it just has to be that nice.

She's a beauty for sure but missing some things. Can't believe I'm saying this but I like the 74 a lot more. So did someone else for 120+K

The blow-hard who claimed, "You know this truck was worked. Things were different back then. You bought a truck to work it", is just running his mouth about what he doesn't know. If they were all bought to work why were there Cheyenne Super big block short beds with bucket seats?

I don't know. Then again the project has a bench seat and back in the day it pulled weight it never should and the former bed was loaded up maybe 100x w heavy landscape material 100 + x. The bed was mostly junk when I got it though, no rust but by 1989 the former owner assaulted all but the tailgate & front panel. Had a nice P13 though, "ah, I'll never use this" SWB are "sport trucks", especially buckets right Tell that to the former owner, he ordered or had installed RV bumper to bumper, like it was a C20.

On the other hand, if he had a shop build it from scratch (or typical project status), he is probably close to the cost and a lot less time/stress.

Now that I think about it the station across town also had a step side shortie with push bumper. That one was a 71 or 72.

Re: Barrett-Jackson 1972 Cheyenne Super rebuilt lq9 $85k
We all know the specialty car market always evolves, but I think we will see things start to move more quickly. This is not doubt a beautiful truck and by all accounts, looks like it was done well.
I doubt my original short bed with the original running gear would ever bring this much. I would argue that between two identical trucks, one with original motor and one with LS, the LS will bring more money. Nothing wrong with an LS, it is unequivocally a great platform. But when we see the corvette guys yanking original motors in favor of an LS, it is an indication of what most buyers are wanting. Not arguing any point, just an observation. And while ultra rare all originals will always be my grail, every time I set my points, I wonder what am I holding on to. |

I kept and drove my all original 72 K20 for 40 years, but when it was time to restore it, had NO problem with a "resto-mod" and upgraded to more modern components in order to make it drive-able by today's standards (especially on the highway). And, having just completed it recently, can attest to just how much dough can get sunk into a project of that nature....$85K = pretty much a break even

Re: Barrett-Jackson 1972 Cheyenne Super rebuilt lq9 $85k
I was just saying the fact that a trim package like the Cheyenne Super, with houndstooth fabric seats, woodgrain trim treatments, chrome trim all over, and options like cruise control, tilt column, a/c... just about anything comfort & convenience, except power windows & locks, available for a car at the time... shows the market wanted trucks for more than work trucks. Especially look at a K/20 with all that. The trucks today that are bought as family vehicles also do some work from time to tie, but they weren't bought "for work" and don't get beat on. That type of use had started back then, just with less people.

About that 85K in business, I don't see how it's possible to have someone else do a nice resto. at 85K. I'll be in mine about 70-75, and that's with me doing the work beyond finishes & rebuilds, and over-all real good parts to work with. Doesn't include the engine.
