Re: Back Window Gun Rack??

I got a set too but my wife says no to installing them. The holes are already there too.

So what is your choice? Are you going too keep your set?

Re: Back Window Gun Rack??

You can hang much more than guns on them. Fishing poles, whips, lariats, hats, coats, etc. I wouldn't (and don't) have a standard cab pickup without them.

Nothing illegal about the rack or transporting a gun in it (NY state doesn’t care, maybe local does) provided you’re obeying the laws regarding transport. But you’re probably opening yourself up to being pulled over more often by officers wanting to check you’re in compliance if you’ve got a gun in it.

Part of me wants a rack and to put some wood replicas in it just for the look and to piss people off. But the rest of me likes flying under the radar and it’s not really worth ruffling the feathers of the fuzz. Any cop is going to be on high alert when they stop me until they realize they’re wood and the thieves out there probably won’t realize they’re wood until they’ve broken a window or something to get in.

I hear ya... i live in a small town in Texas so i don't think it would be a problem... I would NEVER actually leave a real firearm in the back window displayed like that when i'm not around the vehicle... I might throw a BB gun in there if i'm at a cruise or a show... but i'm with you, i don't wanna draw more attention that needed but i also wanna make a statement... it's a catch 22..

Re: Back Window Gun Rack??

I used to keep fishing rods and a 4' level as standard issue. When transporting guns, that's what was for. I remember the last truck with one was mounted so the seat went against it and formed ruts. It is nice to have it all clear back there, though. I have a Saddleman seat cover with a Scabbard I can use. Also a locking tool box.

Re: Back Window Gun Rack??

My wife said she was worried about those babies stabbing her in the back of the head in the event of an accident. I have a bench seat and she likes to ride up close to me. Still trying to find a way to mount a 3 point system for the middle belt. She is short so she would never hit the dash but I am still paranoid.

Saftey takes a back seat when we drive these trucks... haha... kinda like riding your bike without a helment or pads when we grew up in the 80's and 90's..

Re: Back Window Gun Rack??

We had a gun rack that came in our family GMC910 growing up. Hit my head on it occasionally, that's about the only reason i remember it.

My brother's friend had a gun rack and stuck a baseball bat in it. The local police made him remove it. I forget their rationale, but you can imagine something about a "weapon" because you've put a bat where a gun goes.

That was in Saskatchewan...

Re: Back Window Gun Rack??

My dad and I are searching for an old set at flea markets and antique stores to throw in my truck for my metal cane (which I plan on adding a fake patina to so it matches the truck) and for the wooden cane my Grandpa made me when I first started having issues. I’d love to find an old set, but may end up with a new one.

The 70 has one. Far as I know, Ed only used it to hold an umbrella. For right now it will stay, but since I am so much taller than Ed was, I whack it with my head once in a while. It may come out if I get pissed enough after a whacking one day though.

Re: Back Window Gun Rack??

I restored a seat for my former boss, we are both retired now. But he bought a truck for him and his son to fix up. I found these mounted to the back of the seat. It took me awhile to fiqure out what they were, then it hit me, the gun rack that go in the back window. So that’s where they are going now.

Re: Back Window Gun Rack??

The rack behind the seat is pretty cool. If you have removed the gas tank from your truck it would be an excellent storage idea.

I bought a couple of gun racks via the board thinking they would be a neat accessory for fishing poles. But like others have said, just one more thing to catch a thief's eye. Course driving a classic truck isn't exactly blending in with everything else on the road =)

Aint that the truth! I’ve thought about getting whacked in the back of the head in the event of a crash by my gun racks. Then It hit me… Even if I didn’t hit the gun racks, my head was going to at a minimum bounce off of the rear window… I guess I like to live life dangerous, no shoulder belts, no headrest etc.

On my '68 C/10 Stepside, back when I had the stock forward-folding bench seat, I held a nylon scabbard on the seat springs with bunji cords. Kept a .30-30 Marlin there. Seat back, no one would suspect there was a weapon there.
In 1977 I traded seats with another Marine for an electrically-adjustable Bucket-Back Bench seat out of a '69 T-Bird. I still have that seat, but with a 30 amp draw for the motors, it can flatten your battery out in no time, if not running.
I also have a Cowboy Hat Rack, too. I keep my hardhat there.
