Roof Rack '72 Suburban

I am looking to install an OEM roof rack on my '72 Suburban and was wondering if they are specific to the Suburban or were they the same ones offered for that era of GM station wagon as well? Any help and direction is appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Re: Roof Rack '72 Suburban

Here are some threads.

I believe they were dealership installed for the most part. With station wagon ones being narrower. But they can be found on Burbans through the 80's.

Good luck and welcome aboard.

Glad mine came with one. I saw another on a similar Suburban that had been sitting for years. It's gone now though. Green is mine.

Re: Roof Rack '72 Suburban

Is it safe to assume that the ones that came on 73 through late 80s suburbans should fit the ‘72? It’s just drilling into the roof correct? Thanks for all information.

Mine is drilled and uses screws and nuts on the inside. I replaced the rubber under the rack and used some clear silicone to seal it.
If I were to do it again, I would use insert nuts. Much better seal and clamping and no need to have someone screwing outside and someone inside holding the nut.

Re: Roof Rack '72 Suburban

This is a bit off topic of the roof rack in this thread since it’s about the factory roof racks but does anyone know if any full length roof racks for the suburban that are available? I’ve looked and I haven’t found any. I have seen a few that look custom made but I wonder if a full-size van would be close enough to work?

Re: Roof Rack '72 Suburban

Seeing if I can post a burb roof rack string I did a search on, crossing fingers .... It worked! Maybe you guys can find something in here ?

And a heads up ... some of those threads are really old so if you reply to them you might not get an answer. But there is a lot of good info scattered through them.

I did another search using the Google search button at the top of the page highlighting the 67-72 button ...

Re: Roof Rack '72 Suburban

I spent a long time browsing through them today. I really like the kind of home made ones. I'm pretty sure I have a stock one in a tube somewhere. If I remember correctly I paid way too much for it years ago. It wasn't in the shape I was hoping and I think pieces were missing.

Edit: Even if I found it I wouldn't sell it. (just in case someone thought I was trolling a sale haha)
