Re: 72 C-10 Help
You can probably still get motor mounts at a local auto parts store. My stepson just got 2 new mounts from the local parts house for his 72 C1500. I'm sure one of the motor mounts was changed moons ago... thats why it looks different.

Re: 72 C-10 Help
When I did my motor swap, the top one in your pic is the style both of my original ones were on the 307. I ordered 2 new ones that look like the top one and they worked well for a 305 and 350. What motor is in your truck?

Re: 72 C-10 Help
The top one is a safety mount. It has brackets built in to prevent the engine from raising up on hard acceleration when the rubber on the mount breaks loose. It basically is only needed on the right hand side, but it is best to replace both with the newer style.
GM recalled millions of vehicles in the 70,s & put a cable on the right hand side of the engine to the frame so the engine could not rear up. When the engine raised up it pulled the hose off the power brake unit & jammed the throttle wide open. It was a frightening experience. I had it happen to me one time when I was road testing one. I turned the key off right quick & the engine fell back down. This was the largest recall in history for many years. It amounted to about 8 million vehicles. George |

Re: 72 C-10 Help
I believe you mean drivers side MM was where GM did the cable thing because of the breaking MM. The engine raises on DS if that MM rubber dislodged from original mount. Was an across the line issue (models) for GM

Re: 72 C-10 Help
Interlocking motor mounts were standard after the recall. Another fix was a cable-actuated throttle, so that the linkage didn't bind over like the older rod-style.

Re: 72 C-10 Help
My 68 still has the cable straps on it from the recall they put a bracket on the frame and bolted the ends to the exhaust manifold .

Re: 72 C-10 Help
There should be hold down cables on both sides of the engine.
Here's a copy of the recall letter.

Re: 72 C-10 Help
And...
Here are the best pics I can find of those on my truck. I believe the passenger side cable design may have varied depending if the truck had A/C.

Re: 72 C-10 Help
I didn't know about this recall when I broke a mount on my second car, a 1971 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme. I just ran a short piece of chain from a head bolt to the a arm mount stud. One head bolt on either side of the engine had a threaded portion on top to mount the accessory brackets. It worked out very well.

Re: 72 C-10 Help
I stand corrected. It was the drivers side that reared up on acceleration. Thats were the cable was if it only had one.
It started a good discussion. George |

Re: 72 C-10 Help
I knew you knew . Of all the V8 GM vehicles I've had, worked on, or looked at (other than 100pt resto... maybe) none ever had the cables. If anything, just the holes and removed maybe, no brackets. My guess is not many people bothered with the recall

Re: 72 C-10 Help
I worked at a dealership at that time. When people came in to have the restraints installed, some were a bit perturbed that they weren't getting new motor mounts. They'd leave without the fix and take it somewhere else for new motor mounts having the interlock feature.

Re: 72 C-10 Help
Most likely the mounts have been changed or the whole motor over the years. Bet a lot of the cables got tossed during the repair.

Re: 72 C-10 Help
You could put a lot of money on that and not lose. I worked as a mechanic for years, and we tossed those on a regular basis if people came in with complaints. Those restraints did not stop the engine from lifting, they just kept them lifting too far. They'd lift up and then thump down. People owning these vehicles "second hand" quite likely never saw a notification if they didn't buy it from a Chevrolet dealer. I knew of the recall, since I had worked for a dealer(s) on and off from '70-'72. If they came into our shop, I'd explain what had happened and the cure GM used, but they'd opt for the new interlocking motor mounts, usually. Pretty unnerving to have the engine rise up and thump back down, for sure.
