1968 shortbed stepside

OK guys help me with this one. I saw a 1967 shortbed stepside truck. The front fenders have no side lights and the cab is a small rear window cab and the stepside bed has side lights and the guy has papers saying its a 1968. I did not think chevy made a 1968 C10 truck with a small rear window. thanks Rick

68's were available with small windows. I think it was opposite 67, big window was standard and small window was option. Far as I know. 68s came with the front side marker lights.

Re: 1968 shortbed stepside

I'd be checking those vin tag rivits , The 67 was a small window truck with the "panoramic" rear window as an option , easy way to tell is to start looking for the 67 only signs , rear window/Vent windows /ashtray/frame rails /firewall/ etc/etc , I've heard stories about 68 small window cabs but I've never seen one .

Re: 1968 shortbed stepside

I'm pretty skeptical. The only 68 small window trucks I have ever heard of were the big trucks, where they were standard until 72. That's why there would be no need to "use up" small window 67 cabs in the following model year.

Re: 1968 shortbed stepside

I'd be checking that VIN. Is it a '67 or '68 VIN?

I think it's a '67 with rear fenders replaced or a '68 with a '67 cab and front fenders replaced. If it's titled '68 and is a '67 VIN it's titled incorrectly, by calendar year.

There may be a unicorn or two out there. But '67 was the last year GM offered an upgrade rear window option, ending a pickup tradition dating back to the '47 Advance Design.

Re: 1968 shortbed stepside

Regardless of the window after Jan 1 1968 the front fenders had to have at least a reflector on them as per fed DOT standards . I’m leaning towards cab replacement . Or a truck manufactured in 67 as a 68 . But I believe gm as all the other manufactures changed to the reflectors as the year model change occurred.

From what I remember a friend who worked at the Tarrytiwn plant always had a furlough when they retooled at the year model change . So a 68 would not have followed a 67 down the line

Re: 1968 shortbed stepside

Without pictures we're p!ssing in the wind here.
OK: Guy has 1968 registration.
Front fenders have NO side marker reflectors.
Cab has Small Window.
Stepside Fenders do have side marker reflectors.

First possibility -- '67 Cab and Doghouse on a '68 Chassis and Bed -- proper registration.
Second possibility -- '67 Truck with Bed replaced after collision by a '68 Bed, or just fenders. DMV error in registration.
Third possibility -- '67 Truck, as above, but Dealer sold it in 1968, in a state that goes by Date of Sale, rather than Model Year.

What about the trim? Is the front grille White, or Body Color? Is there aluminum icing on the leading edge of the hood and eyebrows on the fenders? Are the trim rings steel or anodized aluminum? Wheels Argent Silver or body color?

Re: 1968 shortbed stepside

you have a hybrid....it's been pieced together from different year parts...not uncommon for this generation of Chevy trucks
it all boils down to what it's titled as...
67 was the last year for the small back window period....the large window was optional but, starting in 68 ALL were large back window

Re: 1968 shortbed stepside

My best guess would be cab replacement. Small back window says the cab is a 67. If the paperwork is 68, the cab may have been replaced when the truck was fairly new. If that dealer had a 67 cab left in stock.... That would explain the small window 68. But I'm thinking someone pieced together parts to complete the truck whe
ther as a restore or just to drive.
