Power steering 250 6 cylinder
I'm trying to add power steering to my 67 with a 250 inline 6, the engine is a 1974 . I have a pump mounted but the pulley sticks out too far forward.
Is there a pulley I can swap or what do I need ? |

Re: Power steering 250 6 cylinder
So after doing more research it appears I need to find a double groove pulley. GM 354325 I believe.

I don't know the number but the double groove is common on SBC PS pumps that also had AC.

Check with member lolife99. He seems to have a lot of pulleys and knowledge on what you may need

I’ve never done a 6-cylinder power steering swap. Seems like there are several bracket configurations. Maybe ask this question in the 73-87 section since this is a 74 engine. I’ll do some looking also.

Does your 74 engine have the integrated head?
Those brackets with be different from what I can see. Maybe this thread will help. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=749667

Re: Power steering 250 6 cylinder
My intake unbolts from the head, I have a double pulley coming and think this might work.
I researched some old threads where they showed brackets and I believe I have the wrong front bracket. I have bracket 354527 for the back and side of the pump. I need part 355789 to go with these brackets. Some of these brackets appear to look the same but have different part numbers. Last edited by Bunky; 11-26-2022 at 09:25 PM. |

Re: Power steering 250 6 cylinder
If I remeber right (I'm getting old and things get foggy lol) there are 3 different set ups for the L6. Early, late, and integral. The first break is somewhere around 67. The harmonic dampener changed and the belt offsets did too. Then integral heads use different brackets but as I remember the same pulleys. Which is why there are a bunch of PS set ups from integral heads on evilflay, no one wants them and they don't fit the earlier styles.
the other option is a set of custom brackets offered on evilflay. Be sure your balancer is in good shape, PS adds a load.

I may have it figured out just waiting for the pulley to show up.. The set up is only temporary on the L6. I want to convert to disc brakes but have manual steering, so I figured I should do it all at once. |

Re: Power steering 250 6 cylinder
Why couldn't you force the pulley further onto the shaft? Seems like an option if it doesn't hit the pump first. Just need a spacer to force it on further.

Re: Power steering 250 6 cylinder
Ok so I have my pulleys on and lined up, waiting on alternator double pulley. Currently have one of those flex universal type upper radiator hoses and it inferes with my power steering pump. I have read where some of the box store molded hoses are too short and don't fit. Does someone have a part number for a upper hose that works ?
