S-10 swap - Clutch & Brake pedal (& master cylinder question)
Back after a long absence. I've found a manual transmission for my truck (49 - S10 - LS).
I'm installing an AR5 from a Colorado/Canyon. If you're not aware of this setup, check out FABBOTFAB.COM. I plan to do a little thread on the install as there is less info out there than you would expect. Uses the 4L60 bellhousing. I've been told that it is almost exactly the same length as the automatic. And guys are apparently getting 700HP out of these transmissions. MY QUESTION FOR YOU GUYS: I've currently got the automatic brake pedal installed hanging from the stock, modified bracket. I need to swap to a brake and clutch pedal set-up with a hydraulic clutch master. cylinder. HOW WOULD YOU DO IT? S-10 oem pedal? Master? Aftermarket? Combination? Vertical or horizontal...interior or engine-bay master? Any help is appreciated greatly. If any if you guys have pics of your setup, that would be awesome. |

Interested in the AR5 swap.
Used T56s are crazy expensive around here, might as well buy a new one. My '52 is a 250 with WC T5, which should will hold up Ok, but I lost my 'spare' T5 to my son to replace the grenaded T5 in his LS swapped 3rd gen Z28. The T5 stood up for a couple years, but then he put big wide corvette rims and tires on it and that was too much for 3rd gear. To answer your question, I took the low buck but higher effort approach and cut up a c10 pedal box to fit the AD and converted clutch to hydraulic. Here is the pedal box shortened to fit, welded to a plate that bolts to firewall and bolted to a plate welded to dash: With pedals, slight tweaks to pedals to clear column were needed : Springs, clutch pushrod, safety switch and some bracing: Masters: |

if you have an 82-93 s10 pedal assembly the clutch pedal assembly will bolt right to the side of it. so you can swap in the whole thing when you find one or just the clutch pedal parts.

no, but I installed two last year for guys that were planning on automatics. I will see if they will unbolt them. best I can do!

Maybe I just go this direction and make life easy. I would be nice to have clutch and brake pedals "parallel" (same distance from the firewall).

Look at Jeep TJ pedal assemblies on Ebay. I picked up a set on for cheap years ago. The pedals are pretty long and close to the firewall, so you may have to do some angle grinder and mig work to get them how you want. The brake master had the same bolt pattern as Savana/Express vans, so finding a master or hydroboost setup shoudn't be that big of a deal either.

I think a lot of the time the clutch pedal is a bit higher off the floor due to the need for travel at the other end. a hyd system may be a little different due to mechanical advantage etc. it is a personal preference thing as long as a full pedal travel results in the required amount to make the slave end work to full potential. I seen one where the fella was having brake trouble and the reason was simply that the pedal bottomed out before the master cylinfer had a full stroke of travel.

How much modification does the S10 pedal assembly require to fit in a 51? I found a set yesterday and should be able to pull it out tomorrow.

easy peasy, trim the front of it so it fits under the dash and the booster part fits against the firewall. I like to add a plate that angles it 5 degrees so the front brake reservoir doesnt starve under panic braking. this picture is before I drilled and bolted to the under dash. if you use the clutch assembly it will have extra support rods that you bolt to the floor. edit: I gues i had a couple pictures of the clutch assembly bolted to a s10 pedal. you can see the extra support rods in the pictures.
