Hood seal
What is the proper installation of the hood seal? I see them installed different ways at the car shows. Some have the rubber pointing up, some pointing down. Some don't have any at all. I ask questions. The ones who have them pointing down say it prevents the hood to close all the way down in the back. So which way is the factory install?

Pointng up. Pointing down doesn't seal anything and is pointless. Thea seal is there so heat from the engine and any other smells from the engine bay don't come I to the cowl which from here could come into the cab.

The people that have a problem with the hood not closing correctly after they install the seal is not because of the direction it is installed, it is because the seal is made wrong. The lip on the seal should not stick straight up it should lay back slightly so the hood pushes it down when you close it. The early reproduction seals were all made wrong and held the back of the hood up when closed. Someone came out with a seal that had the correct profile and they worked good. I don't know if the bad ones are still being made but you should be able to find one with the correct profile. I will see if I can find pictures of the difference. EDIT: First picture s the bad one. People told me it was due to worn out hood hinges. Then I read on this site about the original ones layed over. I got the right one from GMCPauls and now everything is back to normal. Mine looks just like D.B's on my original low mile '72 Cheyenne. The purpose of the slight slant is when the hood closes, it pushes that gasket down against the cowl....though I really don't think it severs much of a purpose. LOL

It's one I got from GMCPauls. It slants towards the window enough that when the hood strikes it, it will fold down.
I wonder if the hood seal was used to keep water from running in between the hood and cowl, then dripping onto the distributor and coil. |

If NOS is not available, I'd be looking at Fairchild rubber seals. In my experience, they seem to be the closest to OEM fit and rubber quality.
Their cowl seal is part number G4064 which replaces GM part numbers 3761922, 3886791, or 6270848.
