Original hood hinge colour

Looked through as many posts as I can find but cant seem to find an answer.

What was the original finish on the hood hinges, were they painted?

Re: Original hood hinge colour

I don't believe they were painted. They were dipped in a solution that turned them gray. I thought the chemical was similar to what GM used to blackened bolts.
Paint would get in the way of the function of the hinges. Same finish as the hood locking mechanism.
The hood opens and closes so smooth it's amazing. Bead blasted first and then dipped.
Will be interested in other comments.

FWIW I’ve Parkerized them in the past and they turn out a nice grey color and hold up. After a while spray some Boshield on them once in a while and they hold up nicely.

Re: Original hood hinge colour

I believe Accelo's right. They were given a process treatment like phosphating, or Parkerizing. Kind of a gritty-surfaced Cast Iron Grey.
I bought some GM replacement Hood Hinges in the Early Aughts [~2002] from the Chevy dealer. They were a little darker than my originals, but those may have faded with time.
Now installed on my '68 C/10 Stepside, and I don't have to slam the hood anymore.

Re: Original hood hinge colour

Coating in zinc oxide or phosphate possibly? That would turn them grey and protect them

I figured that whatever they were coated in would rub off due to the friction when in use. As you say will be interesting to see others input

Re: Original hood hinge colour

Accelo & '68OrangeSunshine's descriptions are accurate. I have several NOS sets with a pair I installed about 12 years ago. That pair looks the same as the ones in waiting. Darkish grey, almost flat blackish.

Do a search on Team Camaro, (camaros.net/forums). Lots of info on hinge and hood latch finishing.

Re: Original hood hinge colour

I used this product a while ago. Holds up well on the latch. Did not do the hinges. I doubt the color is perfect, but gives a nice contrast to the satin black used elsewhere. If you are simply looking for a contrast as I was, it worked well. 6 months ago everything was looking pretty nice till I ran the truck into the workbench. Banged things up some. Oh well. it's a truck.

When I bought my truck the back of the hood wouldnt go completely down, so sent them off to this guy Willey and they came back like this. Been on since 2016 and no problems. https://www.hoodhingerepair.com

Re: Original hood hinge colour

I’ve seen a few mentions of Wiley and seems to always get great feedback. Unfortunately being in England the cost of postage plus the work would come out towards the thick end of $1000. I’m going to have a go at servicing them myself, haven’t decided how I’ll finish them yet but will let you know how I get on. Once again thankyou all for your excellent input.

Was looking at Wiley’s site. Seems he has multiple finishes. Are yours the Eastwood Zinc Phosphate or one of the powder coated finishes? Sounds like they’re holding up well?

I checked my invoice frpm Willey. Total price in January 2016 was 175.00 without shipping and yes it says used Zinc Phospate Paint, shows 25.00 extra, on them. He also recommended Sea Foam Deep Creep for lubing them.
