How Much Drop?

The first truck has the stance I want. I want the same on the black truck that is stock now. Do you think this is a 2/2 or 3/3 drop? I'm guessing 3/3. Pretty sure it's same front and rear. What do you think?

I plan to use spindles, which give 2" drop and the question is 2" or 3" rear springs. If I decide I want 3" up front I'll get 1" lower coils. I like the rake so that's what I'm thinking same front and rear

Re: How Much Drop?

Looks to me like 2 might do it. Probably put your spindles on and then see what the back needs.

Re: How Much Drop?

I think he had the stock rake on that truck, so same/same drop whichever it was. It's the rear springs I need to decide with. I only want spring drop in the rear, no block. Spindles are 2" and for 3" I'd install 1" drop springs. If nothing else I could do the spindles and make wood blocks to mock up the rear. It would be easier to judge from the pictures if I knew the tire sizes. Both sets of wheels are 16" and the black truck has 235/60s

Re: How Much Drop?

That looks to be along the line of a 2/3 drop but judging by the wheels that truck might have the ZQ8 package which would mean it was slightly lower than stock right from the factory.

Re: How Much Drop?

245/50-16 were the common zq8 and camaro tires of the era. Start with a 2/2 drop, that should get u where u want.

The raspberry truck is a ZQ8 and I remember him say he put a little more drop on it. I don't know if that was front and rear or how much.

Thanks for the help. Do you think you could guess if you think tires on that truck are 50 series? I agree with your suggestion to start with 2/2. I was hung up on not wanting rear blocks and I want to maintain the rake. I've decided to go with 2/2 and if I decide I want 3/3 I'll get the lower coils and 1" blocks wouldn't be the end of the world. Tire size can affect the scrub line that much

Comparing the pictures again, I think the raspberry truck has less rake than the black one with original stance. Maybe 2/3 is what I'm after, so -3" leafs. I'm not doing anything about this till this summer, so more time to think and possibly catch someone out and about with the stance I'm after and ask what they did.

I'd BET those tires are 245/50-16. How many leafs are in your rear spring pack right now?

Re: How Much Drop?

My first gen has 2 inch spindles and 2 inch drop springs with 235-60-15's on the front. And personally after driving it 130k miles I would have went with 1 inch drop springs or cut one coil off the factory ones. With the 2 inch drop springs I've worn out 2 sets of factory bump stops. Here in PDX the city hasn't found a street that didn’t need a speed bump or ten.

On thing to consider is that I believe the ZQ8 come with fender flares that lower the upper part of the wheel well to give it a lower look than the regular S10's. I know that they did that with the Typhoon and Syclone packages.

Re: How Much Drop?

Actually, the ZQ8 package has dropped coils and leafs for about 1.5" drop.
Check out this link for drop pics. There is a green one on this last page that's 2/2 but you can look at hundreds of them on that thread.

Re: How Much Drop?

Thanks for all the help. I'll check the leaf count in the morning. I'm on the S10 forum but it's been a month or more. I'll check that thread

Traces of marine biology?

It is a cool one. One of those would be perfect for my single guy get out of town vehicle.

I'd rather have an early S-Series but this one came easy. I see a couple longbeds sitting. The one is really clean, plain Jane white. But that one looks like a seldom used chore truck. Probably has low miles. It's at a high dollar house. The other sits at the local junk yard that isn't a jy anymore. They used to sell used vehicles. They still operate the towing business. I need to inquire. I just think a longbed would be great for what I use this one for. I think a beefy long bed 4wd would be really cool

Re: How Much Drop?

The Sy/Ty's have about the same drop as a ZQ8. About 1.5"
And yes the cladding around the wheel wells add another 2" drop look.
So with the 245/50 16s, it fills the wells very nice.

Re: How Much Drop?

I want moderate, so 2" I think I'd be happy with. I hope to find the ZQ8/Xtreme wheels like the raspberry truck. Then get that size tire. Thanks for the help

Re: How Much Drop?

The Sonoma sits about level now that I put 3 bags of landscape stone across the back of the bed. Now to figure out where to put 3 in the front

Re: How Much Drop?

If anyone plans both a V8 swap and a lower stance do the swap before you lower the front. 4cyl -> LS swap in my '95 gave 1.5 - 2" drop in front and it rides just fine.
As far as I know they are factory springs, but it always sat a little high in front with the 4 cylinder. And a little low in the back with 28 year old springs.

With any kind of power increase planned, figure out slapper bars or caltracks in the rear before you lower the back. Even with stock width rubber and open diff, you will need to do something to stop spring wrap / wheel hop and lowering blocks will make it that much worse. I knew it would wheel hop even with the 4, but I thought I could just ease the v8 off the line and worry about spring wrap later. Nope.....built slapper bars the weekend after it was first on the road with the v8
