The brass barrels are for connecting/grouping ground wires, I believe the little red, yellow and tan pieces are off of nail in outlet boxes known as a "Gang" box of which the nail and the box are missing in your case.

I will never need these barrel ground groupers ,,but curious if they make a crunching tool for them or just use pliers ? it would be fun to drop a few on the ground at the shooting range I go to .. thx by the way for the info.
