1968 GMC Window Regulator Repair

Hi... I need to replace the wheels on my window regulator. Looks like the originals were riveted on(?). What it is best way to replace these? Where can I get replacements? Are the new ones riveted on, bolt-on? Thanks!

Re: 1968 GMC Window Regulator Repair

The little roller wheels used to be a kit. I think Brothers had them before the Holley buy-out.
In the Arizona sun, the rollers break up and turn to little square fragments you have to fight to roll up and down.
I don't know if replacement rivets were included in the kit.
I do remember a Regulator Spindle Drive Rebuild Kit. It gave you a fresh gear and ballbearings inside that dome with the window crank shaft [bottom of your pic] but you had to reshoot the three tiny rivets holding it together. Since there's more profit in selling new regulators, that item vanished.

I bought the kit from Classic parts of America . Worked out very well comes with the rollers and the rivets the rivets are the hammer and dolly type . I used a cross pean hammer and a small socket to back up the rivet kit comes with the tool to start the mushrooming of the rivet

On my 1972, the gear was stripped, so no repair could be attempted. I used an aftermarket ACI unit from Amazon, and it's been good.

What is the best way to flare the rivets? They catch as soon as they start to flare. I've tried ones from LMC and Classic Parts. Both are the same.

If you have a set of Roll Pin punches that would get it started.

It did not come with mine but I have one from the vent window rivet set. I used it on the vent windows and it worked great. When I use it on the roller rivets the rivets start to flare then split.

Re: 1968 GMC Window Regulator Repair

UPDATE:
I got the the new rollers installed. The passenger side is completely assembled now and the window rolls up and down beautiful. I started working on the driver side and when I turned the window crank to get the regulator to the position I wanted, the teeth popped out of the gears and now it's all wonky. Looks like new window cranks are available but how hard is it to mess with the wound spring, both getting it off and resembling it? Is it hard to do and are special tools needed? Should I just buy a new regulator? Thanks ..

Re: 1968 GMC Window Regulator Repair

In a earlier post, I mentioned I had bought a pair of regulator gear repair kits. They had fresh gears in the metal domes and were to be secured by little rivets. Snap rivets might work.
I got them from Brothers [before the Holley buy-out] i think.
You might also check GMC Pauls, and Truck and Car Shops of Orange CA.
Winding back the regulator counterspring is daunting, and the reason I just bought a new regulator from GMC Paul.
