torque spec

On a 1975 chevy truck 12 bolt axle, there is a center pin that holds the axles against the c clips. Any one know what the torque spec is for the bolt that holds that pin in place? Thanks.

Re: torque spec

20-25 foot pounds and some lock tight blue if you are doing it up.

If you are removing one the last guy probably went 75 foot pounds and red, good luck not breaking it off.

Re: torque spec

that bolt with the long pin style end is a common break point. some kinda fun getting the broken piece out too. been there many times. maybe replace that beauty if you can find a new one.

Re: torque spec

Yea. I've kinda rounded the hex bolt head on a few.
Best to replace it just in case.

Re: torque spec

A good feeling when you get it out in one piece, the job is always a little suspenseful up to that point.

Re: torque spec

I have had some luck in the past getting the broken off pin section out of the hole bu using an arc welding rod slipped down into the hole and butted against the pin. then connect the rod to the welder and have a buddy turn the welder on for a second. the rod welds to the pin, and hopefully not the threaded part of the hole, and then the broken off part was pulled out. I've done many of these with broken pins or stripped off bolt heads. always a challenge. best to replace the pin if you can, no use starting out the next go around with a used pin

Re: torque spec

I've never seen one that backed out because it wasn't tight enough. I have seen a bunch of broken ones because the pin for the spiders got loose in the housing for one reason or another.

One of the worse ones was in the 75 Chevelle my mom bought new in 75 and drove for years. the end of that bolt broke and the pin worked it's way out and caught the case and broke off in chunks. That was by the east bound Selah rest area in the dead of winter in 20 Below weather. The only time she ever called me collect in her life. You get a collect call from your mom in the middle of the night in below 0 weather and you take the call. I got hold of a friend who picked it up with his wrecker and her companion went up and picked her up in his car. The pin had come out far enough that one of the spider gears had fallen out and the car wouldn't move and a state patrol pushed her up into that rest area.
