new wind screen & wiper blade replacement

.

Glass guys showed up today to replace the wind screen on my '67. While they attempted that, I tried to fix my bent up wiper blade and found that while I was able to get most of the damage out of it, there's a crack and the material is very thin so it needs to be replaced. The thing appears to be stainless, just like the wind screen trim and is polished nice and shiny. Where can I find a replacement?

The new glass going in is a different manufacturer than what went in last time and feels a tad thicker. The Precision gasket they brought along fit really loose. Just as last time, they position the gasket on the glass, place the trim into the gasket, secure it down with tape and then install the rope into the gasket where the pinch weld will go. Then the whole assembly is placed into it's home. The first attempt failed with the trim getting released from the gasket during the roping-in process. They started the rope pull at the bottom and found by the time they got to the top, everything went caddywampus. The thinking now is they need to start from the top. They've took off for another (easier) job for now and will return later this afternoon to finish and bring along another person with more experience.

Here we go again!

-Kevin

Re: new wind screen & wiper blade replacement

They came back and tried a few more times without success. The trim would separate from the gasket at the top. Thinking now is the gasket is either wrong or was stretched too far out of the box. Indeed, when they put the gasket on glass, it was obviously a very loose fit. The gasket had been sold and used by another party before being returned and now we have it. So...new gasket and will try again.

Any hints on window install with trim? This trim is the shallow sort which I believe was equipped on earlier 67-72s. Gonna go look on LMC for the wiper blade and maybe learn something about the various trim types.

Thanks,

-Kevin

Re: new wind screen & wiper blade replacement

I’m fairly certain the shallower trim is later model (71-72) and the deep trim is earlier. If not paired with the correct gasket that will be a problem. Deep trim is 5/8” or so and I’ve heard easier to install.

I feel like I’m watching wheeler dealers with all this talk of wind screens. Shallow trim is definitely 71-72.

Re: new wind screen & wiper blade replacement

I believe this is the stock type wiper blade I got, but the part numbers for these wipers and refills and what it comes with have changed in the last couple of years. https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/WIP61533
I clicked on the thread to find out what a wind screen is, still not sure. :-)

Re: new wind screen & wiper blade replacement

Here is a link for the stock type wiper blades. I doubt they come polished though. I bought ACDelco brand a few years ago but I don't remember from where or what the part number is.

Copy & Paste from Glass.com...You're welcome.....

Windscreen:
The window glass at the front of a vehicle, through which the driver and front seat passenger of a car view the road and the world is known in some countries as the windscreen. In most of North America and specifically in the United States, this glass is called the windshield.

Thanks guys...looks like the Summit set might just be coming my way.

Oh and I stand corrected: it's windscreen not wind screen LOL

I think it was supposed to be this:

"In most of North America and specifically in the United States, this glass is called the windshield."

Another quote "of coarse we can't fix it, do you think this show is Wheeler Dealers!!"

Re: new wind screen & wiper blade replacement

My buddy and I put the windshield in my '67 but it didn't have the trim.
I think starting at the top would be better because the upper corners are sharp and it makes it difficult to get the gasket in place .
We started at the bottom but still managed to work it in at the top corners.
Definitely not a fun job, took us about 2 hours.

Re: new wind screen & wiper blade replacement

I've confirmed we had the wrong gasket. We had the early, deep trim gasket...just wouldn't hold the trim. Should have the correct one soon.

EDIT: My '67 has the later style trim.

Re: new wind screen & wiper blade replacement

As for as replacement windshield wipers, go down to your local O'reilies and at the counter ask for some TriCo wipers, they are brushed aluminum with rubber blades. They are located behind the counter and not on the sales floor. I believe the number is TriCo 33-033. I maybe wrong on the part numbers.

There are several threads on the board about the TriCo brand wiper blades and the part numbers. I replaced mine about a year ago and if I recall they were priced in the $20-$21 range per wiper.

Re: new wind screen & wiper blade replacement

Another gasket...same problem. Even though it was a different part number than the first gasket, they were identical. So...

Now I've just ordered matching trim and gasket from LMC to try and get this glass/trim installed. According to the pictures of the trim sent to me by LMC and the description of having 5/8 of depth, it's the early version that has the 5/8 inch trim channel that anchors into the gasket. See attached picture. I ordered:

Windshield Trim Kit-Stainless Steel 6 Piece 67-70
Part #: 38-5885
and
Windshield Rubber-Custom 67-70
Part #: 38-5910

This just keeps getting more and more expensive.

To follow up here...the glass w/LMC trim kit above installed just fine with a Precision gasket for early trucks (67-70). However despite multiple attempts, the LMC gasket for the same could not be used.

Re: new wind screen & wiper blade replacement

Keeping info in one spot. I just had windshield installed this week. 1972 short trim. Persicion gasket. Dynacorn trim fit was really bad. Ended up using only left side Dynacorn and original upper and right. Installer had everything complete in an hour but upper corner is a but off on right inside. He said it will work into place but doubt it. Rope was started at bottom. Seating original trim was easy. Dynacorn fit was very disappointing

I got the rubber for mine from Steele Rubber. It cost about twice as much as from other suppliers. The installer was amazed how much better it was & easier to install then any he had used before.

It's well established Steele sells the Precision brand windshield & rear window gaskets. Just ask them and they'll confirm.
