Re: 350 engine oil capacity

In case you haven't already done it..

When I bought the kit I used a small box end wrench that just fit over the tube and slid it down to the ridge. I then tapped on the wrench so as not to bugger up the tube.

Re: 350 engine oil capacity

Used to put 5 qts. w/filter change in my 70 K10 pickup and 69 Judge RA3 both original engines, then years ago found specs and both say 6 qts. w/filter, so went with specs. Dipsticks both showed overfull but both engines had been removed and am not positive dipstick tubes are at correct height. Running into same deal with daily driver now (2024 Kia Seltos sx 1.6 turbo) Specs say 5 qts. w/filter, dipstick shows overfull. So have same question, are all 3 manufacturers putting out incorrect capacity specs or??

Re: 350 engine oil capacity

Every SBC I have dealt with including my 68 w a 327, uses 5 quarts if you change the filter. Assumes 1 quart filter. There is a reason a lot of oil comes in 5 quart bottles. This doesn't mean there aren't oddball applications that have larger pans.

Make sure for the older vehicles you aren't accidentally reading from a different engine size page. Some owners manuals were rather general and covered many possible option packages.

For the turbo equipped car, is some of the oil trapped in the turbo?

Re: 350 engine oil capacity

That is the general consensus that they take 5 qts., Pontiac Jim on a GTO forum gave the best explanation I have seen as to why Pontiac did it, (in 66&67 they went to 6+1, then dropped back to 5+1 in 68,69,70...maybe Chevy thought it was a good idea so why not? Am getting these specs from 69 Pontiac service manual, 70 Motors Manual, and 70 Chevy truck chassis manual. All show 6 qts. w/filter change. Thought these were the final word until a couple years ago found out from a guy at Autowire that the Chevy manual page 12-40 (top left of page) is completely wrong on the wiring diagram for the wiper motor! And they are still selling reprints with no correction that I know of. As to the Kia, wouldnt think there is more than a couple tblspns. of oil in turbo lines? Know Im spending way too much time on this lol, but it seems if the finish on a bolt on a child restraint device is suspect a global recall is launched, but oil capacity and wiring diagrams "forget it, they will figure it out". Still love the hobby!
