SM 465 Shift Leaver ?
Can someone please tell me how to remove the shifter assembly ? I have heard that it is the easiest way to refill the fluid after a change.

Put it in neutral and push down and turn at the same time on the collar assembly assembly at the base of the shifter where it goes into the transmission. It will only turn one way and I believe it’s to the right to remove but it’s been a little bit since I pulled one of my shifters. Once you get the collar rotated pull the shifter straight up. There will probably be a little oil on the portion of the shifter that is in the top of the transmission.

It's not usually that easy though you have to have some strong thumbs.

General Motors used to have a Special Tool, that had a big T handle and a steel wrench with a cut out for the shift lever. Push down and twist, and the tin collar pops up. I made one, years ago, by cutting a 1/2'' wide cut out of one side of a 2 x 4 . Worked the same way, but it broke eventually. Still easier than using your thumb and forefinger. In my Twenties I didn't need no stinkin' Special Tool, but I can't say that now.

Thanks everyone ! I did this years ago when I didn’t feel like crawling underneath the truck. It’s not the fall that’s bad, it’s getting back up !
