LOF windshield and the C10 Gremlins
My 52 year old or factory replaced windshield was attacked by the c10 Gremlins last night. I removed my windshield in January. It has sat in the same position on a stack of tires since. This past month I have on and off worked the gasket and trim. There is another tread on that subject. The trim and gasket have been in place for a week. This morning I come out to see a crack. The windshield has not been touched since trim install last week. I blame on Gremlins but reality is obviously my fault. The only thing I can think of is that I must of put a chip on the edge of the glass while fighting with the crappy aftermarket trim. Present heat wave must of been enough to run a crack. What a shame to loose a LOF windshield.

Re: LOF windshield and the C10 Gremlins
I'm just guessing I'm not really sure just a crazy thought. Maybe the tire pressure changed with the temperature causing some stress to
the windshield, like just enough inflate then deflate to cause a slight squeeze and or expansion. What I'm thinking the weight of the windshield on the tire had a good grip. Just a crazy thought. I'd give this message caution, It is coming from out of my brain 😬 |

Re: LOF windshield and the C10 Gremlins
Given it happened on it's own, I can't be sure, but I really think that I likely chipped the edge of the glass with a ball tip tool creating a stress point. It took a few heat cycles and pop. The wheel tire was actually a very good table. The sidewall was even but glass shorter than wheel so the gasket lip on one side was resting on tire. Not a full sidewall to glass contact so that could have stressed as well. We will never know for sure. I am just a bit sad and actually feel a bit of guilt for not being more careful and killing a 52 year old original windshield. I now realize the old glass may be more hard/brittle and requires a bit more attention than I gave it. On a more happy note. The side windows are complete, and I didn't chip the paint putting in the scraper and felt trim.

That sucks you lost the original windshield. The weight of the glass itself caused the break. For future reference, never store or transport glass flat even if you feel it is supported.
