they say to use the pump in o/d because otherwise the pump turns too slow to operate properly. on some pumper trucks with an auto trans the trans has a lock out switch to keep the trans in high gear so when pumping hard the trans doesn't downshift. not good if something fails and that downshift happens, trust me. the guy on the end of the hose inside the burning building is trusting the pump operator with his/her life, so...

is that a water tender unit or a pumper unit? a water tender is a tanker truck with a smaller (usually) water pump on it than a regular fire engine would have. some tenders are made to "pump and roll" meaning they can use the pump while driving for extinguishing wildland fires, grass fires etc. some have water nozzles on the front bumpers for grass fires, others have a hose reel or hose line that can be held by a second person in the truck while they drive.

It's a pumper, has a huge pump above auxiliary tranny.
