Driveway Paint...What's ya Think

Just finishing up a few things. The sun was pouring in the garage this evening on the hood I installed today. The reflection showing a fair result. This was a hood I found for 100 bucks. Took me a week of filling and sanding but was way better than the one I ran into the work bench last year.
Single stage, no clear. Has a very original look to the gloss. Not too shiny. This one had a few dings, but straightened and filled to my liking. Rest of truck looks good to. I did a full strip repair and repaint.

Looks great.

Did you use a primer sealer?

Are you guys saying you actually painted outdoors?? If so, you must have no insects like gnats and mosquitoes. Try that here and you'd have a real mess. Also, the Calif air resources board would send a cruise missile to your house.

I stripped and rustoleum primed in the fall. Repaired damaged doors from mirror strikes and bed rail tool box rust damage over winter. Early spring got lots of blocking done. Late spring the color started. I shot individual panels in make shift pop-up tent with harbor freight tarp sides. I shot a few extra color coats to allow for some color sanding of mistakes and such. Bugs are not a huge issue in my area, but I get wind most afternoons. That was the biggest challenge. I am waiting on a couple fuel line fittings. Then I'll move the truck for a couple pics.
One point to make. The project was an experiment using rustoleum cans of primer. It allowed for easy clean up doing small areas as time allowed. Never intended to be show quality, I wanted something on the lines of a 4 or 5 year old truck that was taken care of. I did leave the door jambs to bring in a look of well used. I also left the bed untouched as I used the truck to haul landscape and grove material around the house.

Early in the morning on a dry California desert day, piece of cake. And I only use lacquer. I'm in the South Coast Air Basin, but I'm done with a paint job quickly enough that they wouldn't get missile lock.

Isn't lacquer paint banned in California?

I haven't shot any since about 2014, but one can buy cheap lacquer in quart cans from some parts stores around here.

I've seen conflicting statements and looked at the CARB diktats, which seem to vary locally but don't reference lacquer paint (or prohibition thereof) per se so I wonder if it falls under single stage guidelines. https://ww2.arb.ca.gov/our-work/prog...les-california

Re: Driveway Paint...What's ya Think

Looking at those rules, it would appear that the paint I have has less than the specified VOC/Liter, which I guess is the same as ROC. That isn't clear to me. Stores are selling it, so I'm taking that as it's allowed. It's one stage gloss, but they sell a clear coat too. But that's Dupli-Color, which I guess isn't all that great a paint. I've usually only used Dupont or Ditzler lacquers.

I'd be happy if my truck looked like that, only in red. I don't want a show queen, just something respectable that won't get pulled over for a roadside vehicle check.

Re: Driveway Paint...What's ya Think

It's ShopLine urethane. I used rustoleum to build and block to a rough state. Not the cheapest way but easy clean up given many days here and there. Let cure at least a month before using the proline primer to high build and final block. I was told rustoleum reacts to most primers. I think it probably does if you rush and don't let it cure enough. I have zero experience with auto paint. At this point the job looks just how I wanted. Time will tell if the rustoleum was a mistake or not.

Re: Driveway Paint...What's ya Think

You didn't use Rustoleum primer in spray cans, did you? I did that on one paint job years ago (in a few spots I needed to build a little) and it shrank under the top coat. If you did, hopefully urethane doesn't act like my lacquer did. All the Rustoleum had to be ground out and the spots repainted- which can be easily done with lacquer.

Re: Driveway Paint...What's ya Think

Yes in some areas. But it was months before I shot the urethane primer. Rustoleum has also changed their primer. I'm going to stay positive it cured and did it's thing. The paint is 2 to 4 months old at this point. So far so good. It will start seeing hot sun soon. Plan on bringing engine back to life this week but seems lots of life is stepping up for some attention as well.

Re: Driveway Paint...What's ya Think

It looks good! Fingers crossed it stays that way.

With the cost of paint jobs nowadays this is becoming more popular. And as a result more information is available and the myths about having to have a bodyshop spray your paint are being busted.

Re: Driveway Paint...What's ya Think

^ True, but it's important to know what you're doing, too. I cleaned up the rust and painted the roof of my truck before I put the new cabover camper shell on, and used catalyzed urethane paint. I'm not afraid of a lacquer or even an enamel paint job without protective gear, but catalyzed paint is a whole other animal.

I was concerned about overspray. The driveway is concrete and so the light colors never really showed. I was very careful at containment and it surely made a difference. Only one small area of light overspray where the wind flipped a tarp close to where I was working. The summer sun took care of it in short time. I could tell there was some spray around as the orange tree got a few speckles. So it's not like this stuff stays close.
Finally getting the last of the fuel line parts later today. Excited to light off the new intake. It will take a bit of tuning. Thursday will be the start of some medical for wife so I'll set this aside for hopefully just a day or two.
All the kind comments took my mind off of less pleasant things this week.

Re: Driveway Paint...What's ya Think

Very nice!

I remember my Grandfather used to paint his truck with brush! He'd buy a gallon of white paint from the hardware store and lay it on! A girl that lived next door to them came over and helped him one time. I'm not sure what year model it was, but I believe it was Chevy. It was his work truck at the local oil company, and they gave it to him when he retired.

I also remember that he kept a fishing rod in his truck at all times. He went around fixing people's oil furnaces and would stop at several ponds throughout the day, so he could bring home some supper.

If I park a car outdoors, unless it's just rained, I can see dust on the horizontal surfaces after just a couple hours. But, hey, your paint job looks great! One of my favorite colors, too.
