Low 40's here. I was getting the same age vibe so I figured I would chime in .

I have no issue using self checkout. I find it to be way faster than using a cashier. I don't mind bagging my own groceries either, I've come to prefer it now. I don't have to worry about the high school student bagger putting my bread into a bag first and 3 cans of corn on top, crushing the loaf. I pack all my bags in a way to unpack them at home easier. Hell, half the time you still need to bag your own stuff even if there is a cashier there ringing you up.

Some things are definitely easier to buy with a cashier, like the example of lumber.

To each is their own.

Re: Self-Check Out Only @ Lowes

The Lowe's here went all self except in the pro (lumber etc) area a little while back. I dont go in as much as I used to (when I worked there heh) but every time I do there are always more than enough staff standing by and helping with any issues.

As far as self checkout in general whether Lowe's or grocery stores, in the beginning of this phase of shopping I didnt like it. But now I prefer self checkout because I feel I get through it quicker than standing in line. No more folks chatting up the cashiers or fumbling for this or that. But Im sure this will all change since Ill be 65 in a little over a month

Re: Self-Check Out Only @ Lowes

Perhaps it's as much a matter of principle as it is of age?
For us old geezers, we perceive our freedoms eroding away a little at a time as we are forced to do things that we may not like.

It may come down to simply feeling as if we are being denied a choice or a preference that we should have, I don't know.

If I have a cart full of items, I prefer a cashier, if it's a few items, then I will often use the self check.

Heck, I was able to remodel my entire house for $27.37 using the self check option...

Not 65....yet..but I am set in my ways...I absolutely hate the "new" way of doing things..
And refuse to comply if I have a choice
and I also hate change ,,if it works, then leave it alone, you making it "better" just makes it worse for me

Re: Self-Check Out Only @ Lowes

Around here Lowes has had no registers open except self-checkout for a couple years now. I don't care for self-checkout very much. I just take my items to the customer service where they do returns and ask them to check me out. They don't mind at all. I tell them I'm registered with them for veteran's discount and they knock 10% off. Overall I'm happy with them and the self-checkout is fine for other people.

Re: Self-Check Out Only @ Lowes

It's been quite awhile since I've been in Lowe's, and they had cashiers and self-checkout. Walmart still has both. I prefer using cashiers, not on principal, just whatever works best for me at the time. Our local supermarket has both and I usually go through the self-check, especially if the cashiers are busy. Whichever is quicker / more convenient for me. Oh by the way, I have made 75 trips around the sun..... for whatever that's worth.

It's not about that on the corporate level, it's about the bottom dollar and not having to hire employees. Instead they have to hire more security to prevent theft now. Morons.

I cant defend any CEO's pay it just makes no sense to me.

I will say Lowes does have a lot of good benefits if an employee chooses to use them. Good insurance, paid schooling, a good 401K program, and another if I remember correctly you can buy Lowe's stock at something like 20% below market once a year. Now Im not totally sure exactly on how that works and my number might be off. I do know when I worked there I opted out of that and after I left my wife and I were looking at that and went oh well opportunity lost on that one.
