Manual drum brake issue
I redid all the brakes on my 68 consisting of new shoes, cylinders and had the drums resurfaced last fall . The brakes pulled slightly to the right so I adjusted the shoes to full lock and then backed off till there was drag on all four. I took it out today and was on my gravel driveway . It’s a long drive so I got it up to 20-25 mph and slammed the brakes. Both passenger brakes locked up and skidded on the gravel . Drivers side didn’t even disrupt the gravel . I drove around around applying the brakes and the left front/rear got warm so I know they are active. But not working properly I’m going to pull a drum and look at the shoes anything I should look for ?
It’s puzzling that one side isn’t working but the other side works great .

Re: Manual drum brake issue
I’m a dumb ass don’t rush doing brakes . Rear the push pin from the wheel cylinder was not engaged . Not sure what the issue was on the fronts I scuffed the rotor and shoes didn’t see any problem but I can lock up all four on blacktop now .

Re: Manual drum brake issue
Though it didn’t involve my 70, (original 4 wheel drums), I went through the same struggle on my Dually. I had to replace one of the cylinders on the rear, and had that hub on and of no less than five times before I finally figured out that I forgot one of the small levers for the auto adjuster.
The conundrum was that the hubs are so bulky that I didn’t want to take the other side off to use it as a reference. In the end, that would have been a WHOLE lot easier |

Re: Manual drum brake issue
I can't count on my fingers and toes how many brake jobs I've done over the years, but I always take a picture before I start....my memory is short but a picture is the ticket to success.
Before todays tech I had one of them polaroid instant picture cameras |

Re: Manual drum brake issue
I find at work that the answer will become painfully obvious just AFTER I've hit enter and admitted my incompetence by asking a broad spectrum of co-workers

Re: Manual drum brake issue
Been in that exact place before, only on the fronts. It was my teenage years and that first attempt at a stop was really interesting with only one front brake grabbing.

Re: Manual drum brake issue
I’ve had brain flatulence - one time I changed the disc brake pads on a car (something I’ve done a lot) and as always (fortunately) I took the car for a test drive afterward - hit the brakes and heard a horrible screeching sound… turned out I had put the pads in backwards…metal against metal…Jeez….

Re: Manual drum brake issue
Someone should start a "repair mistakes & blunders" thread. I always like reading the stories in the Rock Auto newsletters.
